The nativity scene exhibition in Oberau features nativity scenes from Alpine, southern Italian and Oriental cultures across more than 100 m². Also on site are the spring-fed natural lake at the Alpine swimming pool and the “Das goldene Au” themed trail. These attractions focus on different interests: nativity scenes, nature by the water and the history of the municipality. This makes it possible to explore Oberau based on specific interests, rather than combining the local themes into a single outing.
Nativity Scene Exhibition and Getting Around
The exhibition brings together nativity scenes from three different cultures. Those interested in nativity scene art will find a clear cultural focus here; the traditions represented range from Alpine and southern Italian to Oriental. The exhibition covers more than 100 m².
The route to the nativity scene exhibition starts at Oberau railway station: go through the underpass and turn right into Schmiedeweg. After about 150 m, the exhibition is on the left.
Natural Lake and Local History
The Oberau Alpine swimming pool has a large natural lake fed by a spring. This local attraction differs from the cultural themes of the nativity scene exhibition and history trail: here, the focus is on the natural lake.
The “Das goldene Au” themed trail presents the varied history of the municipality of Oberau. It offers a distinct way to discover the area: while the nativity scene exhibition brings together exhibits from different cultures, the themed trail focuses on Oberau’s local history. Together with the natural lake, these are three distinct interests to explore locally, without implying a shared route or sequence.
More to Explore in the Wider Garmisch-Partenkirchen Destination
A separate group of attractions belongs to the wider Garmisch-Partenkirchen destination. There, the Partnach Gorge combines nature and history: visitors can walk between towering rock walls and experience the water rushing below. The gorge was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors in 1912.
Hikes in the area also vary in character. At 1,780 metres, the Wank is Partenkirchen’s local mountain and is suitable for leisurely hikes with far-reaching views. The Wank cable car takes you directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to its summit. The 1,237-metre-high Eckbauer can be reached by cable car and hiked in both summer and winter; it is considered a versatile hiking area. Check the relevant operating conditions before planning cable car trips to the Wank or Eckbauer. Another trail option is the Kramerplateauweg at the foot of the Kramer: this panoramic trail has well-maintained paths and gentle gradients.
For cyclists, the well-signposted network of routes in Garmisch-Partenkirchen covers more than 453 kilometres. It ranges from relaxed rides to challenging mountain tours and downhill trails. As routes may be added or changed, the stated network length may vary. The range is therefore different from that of the hiking trails mentioned above, encompassing both relaxed outings and physically demanding routes.
Culture in Garmisch-Partenkirchen
The Richard Strauss Institute is located in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens. It houses a permanent exhibition about Richard Strauss’s life and work. The Werdenfels Museum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was established in 1895 from a private collection and is now one of the most important museums of its kind in Bavaria. In the Zugspitze Room, you can see the original Zugspitze summit cross, weighing 150 kilograms.
As you stroll through Garmisch-Partenkirchen, you can discover Lüftlmalerei, the traditional paintings on building façades. A walking tour of Partenkirchen leads from the Garmisch Tourist Information Centre along Ludwigstraße to the pilgrimage church of St. Anton. The Herb Garden of the Senses in Michael-Ende Spa Park offers a different way to experience the surroundings, engaging the senses of smell, taste, touch, sight and hearing.
The Richard Strauss Festival is part of the annual cultural calendar. It takes place in Garmisch every June and includes performances of his works. If you want to plan your visit around a particular edition, check the dates and programme for that year.
