Bad Kohlgrub offers various ways to explore the landscape and local history: a circular moorland nature trail, routes for cyclists and Hörnle as a hiking destination. Churches are also part of the village’s character. When planning your trip, you can focus on these themes according to your interests rather than squeezing every stop into a single itinerary.

Moorland Trails, Cycling Route and Hörnle

The Bad Kohlgrub Moorland Nature Trail is 1.51 km long and follows a circular route from Rochus Chapel back to Rochus Chapel. This means you can take both the stated distance and route into account when planning. Trail conditions may vary.

The themed trail “Catch the Wolpertinger – Moritz in the Peat Bog” leads through meadows, forest and moorland and includes a moorland nature trail. By comparison, the Bad Kohlgrub Moorland Nature Trail is listed as 1.51 km long, while the themed trail focuses on its varied landscapes and the nature trail it includes. The two descriptions therefore emphasize different aspects.

Hörnle is a hiking destination that can be reached on foot or by cable car. These are two stated ways to include it in your plans. Bad Kohlgrub is also a stage on the Lake Constance–Königssee Cycle Route. Another route, the Meditation Trail in the Blue Land, starts in Bad Kohlgrub and ends in Ettal. One description places the village on a cycling route, while the other names it as a starting point with a specific destination.

Churches and Music

St. Martin’s Parish Church is in the center of Bad Kohlgrub; most of its interior is designed in the Rococo style. Rochus Chapel tells a different story of the village: following the plague epidemic of 1633/1634, the community built it as a votive church in the plague cemetery of the time and dedicated it to St. Roch, the patron saint against the plague.

Access to Rochus Chapel is restricted. The main door leads into a small vestibule; the chapel itself is cordoned off by a partition and can only be viewed from there. As access arrangements may change, check the latest information locally before your visit.

Music can also feature in your travel plans: the Klassiktage Ammergauer Alpen festival offers music to its audience every year. Check the current events calendar for specific dates and venues.

Separate Destinations in Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The wider Garmisch-Partenkirchen destination offers other nature and culture experiences. The Partnach Gorge was declared a natural monument in 1912 and opened to visitors. As they walk through it, visitors encounter towering rock walls and the rushing water below.

The Richard Strauss Institute is located in the historic Villa Christina in the spa gardens of Partenkirchen, in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. It houses a permanent exhibition on Strauss’s life and work. Another hiking destination in Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the 1,780-meter-high Wank, Partenkirchen’s local mountain, which is suitable for leisurely mountain hikes with panoramic views. The Wank cable car runs directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the summit; access by cable car depends on operating conditions.
