Marked circular trails, a protected landscape area and a historic church nave give Oberasbach several clearly distinct themes. When planning your visit, you can first choose your preferred hiking distance, then decide whether to focus on the landscape, local history or physical activity. The options range from nature-focused walks to sports and creative activities.

Circular Trails and Hiking Plans

Oberasbach’s three marked circular hiking trails are 4.4, 7.9 and 14.3 kilometres long. At 4.4 kilometres, the shortest route is the most manageable; at 14.3 kilometres, the longest is the most demanding. The 7.9-kilometre route falls in between. This range makes it easy to plan a hike by distance. Routes may change length when they are revised, so check the latest route information before setting out.

The interconnected Oberasbach hiking trail network can be reached directly by public transport from every train station. You can hike the trails in full or in stages. Check local connections before travelling to make sure your planned starting point works for the stage you have chosen.

A separate historical highlight is the Wallenstein’s Camp Experience Trail. Along its 20.4-kilometre route, 28 interactive information stations depict life in the camp and explain the history of the siege. Unlike the circular trails, this route focuses on a specific historical subject, combining it with a longer hike.

Hainberg and Kreutles Meadows

The Hainberg nature reserve lies east of the Oberasbach districts of Altenberg and Unterasbach. It is home to northern Bavaria’s largest continuous area of dry sandy grassland. The Kreuzbach, also known as the Asbach, flows through the protected area and runs entirely within the municipality of Oberasbach. Hainberg also has a pear-shaped pond.

Another walk takes you through parts of the renaturalised Kreutles Meadows, between Langenäckerstraße and Jahnstraße. The route invites you to stroll along the winding Kreuzbach, crosses wooden bridges and is lined with newly planted trees. Hainberg and Kreutles Meadows offer contrasting landscapes: the nature reserve, dry sandy grassland and pond define one, while the other features restored meadows, a stream and bridges.

Local History and Activities

The Protestant Church of St. Lawrence adds architectural history to the landscape and hiking trails: its nave dates back to the 13th century. For travellers who want to include historic architecture alongside nature in their plans, this date offers a clear cultural highlight.

At the Hans-Reif Sports Centre, the pump track is located next to the skate park; the course features rollers, banked turns and jumps. It is suitable for BMX bikes and mountain bikes, scooters, skateboards and inline skates. The pump track therefore offers a different kind of activity from the hiking trails and caters to several types of wheeled equipment.

The town of Oberasbach provides a designated wall where graffiti artists can experiment and create. Spraying is permitted only on this designated wall. Check the current rules on site before using it.
