The area around Fürth offers castle and monastery history, themed trails and natural spaces. When planning, it helps to decide whether you want to focus on a sight, a day hike or a longer cycling route. The destinations also differ geographically: some are close to Fürth, while others are part of the regional trail network in the district of Fürth. These options can help you choose accommodation and plan your stay.

Castles, monasteries and history

Cadolzburg Castle combines surviving structural elements dating from around 1250 with the interactive castle experience museum “HerrschaftsZeiten! Erlebnis Cadolzburg”. The Hohenzollerns are documented as owners of the castle from the mid-13th century. On the first Sunday of each month at 11 a.m., the 75-minute family overview tour “HerrschaftsZeiten! So lebten die Hohenzollern auf der Cadolzburg” takes place there. Since this is a specific scheduled event, check the details before your visit.

In Langenzenn, the former Augustinian Canons’ monastery complex dates from 1409. North of the town church, the Church of the Holy Trinity, it forms a three-wing complex; its cloister is particularly well preserved. The monastery courtyard also features augmented reality elements that can be accessed through the Erlebnis-Hohenzollern app. The site thus brings together a historic complex and a digital interpretation.

In Roßtal, the Archaeological Trail passes the excavation sites of the former castle. Large information panels explain the history of “urbs horsadal,” the name used for Roßtal in its first documented mention in 954. The nearby Museumshof is a carefully restored historic estate with archaeological and local history collections. In Zirndorf, the Count von Faber-Castell Castle showcases the 265-year history of the Faber-Castell company and family; online booking is required.

Hiking trails and cycling routes in the district of Fürth

The Hohenzollern Cultural Hiking Trail is designed as a day hike in the district of Fürth and runs from Roßtal to Langenzenn along field and forest paths. Cultural and historical stops are located in Roßtal, Cadolzburg and Langenzenn. The Allianz Circular Route is a longer option: this approximately 50-kilometre loop for hikers and cyclists passes through Ammerndorf, Cadolzburg, Großhabersdorf, Oberasbach, Roßtal, Stein and Zirndorf in the southern district of Fürth. Check the current route and signage before setting out.

For a longer cycling itinerary, the Hohenzollern Adventure Cycle Route is another option: it is around 95 kilometres long and can be ridden in two variations. A dedicated app lets you take a virtual journey into the past along the way.

In Ammerndorf, the Art and Nature Trail features four themed routes through the countryside and town, as well as along the Bibert Valley Cycle Route. Information boards explain ecological points of interest. One 2.5-kilometre section runs along the cycle route and includes numerous works of art and sculptures. The educational trail starts at the threshing machine house in Ammerndorf.

Nature and excursions with different points of focus

The Hainberg nature reserve covers 213 hectares, borders the Rednitz River and has been in existence since 1995. It lies mostly in the district of Fürth, with a smaller part extending into Nuremberg. Hainberg is a refuge and habitat for many endangered plants and animals and is home to the largest area of nutrient-poor sandy grassland in northern Bavaria. These regional landscape facts give the nature theme a different focus from the historic sites and routes.

One viewpoint nearby is the tower of the Old Fortress in Zirndorf. Rebuilt in 1980, the tower has an observation platform with views over Zirndorf, Nuremberg, Fürth and the surrounding area. If you want to combine a walk with public transport, the Wallenstein’s Camp Adventure Trail offers a convenient starting point: it begins in Stein-Unterweihersbuch and is easily accessible from Nuremberg by bus and underground. Check connections before travelling, as public transport services can change.

In Zirndorf, the PLAYMOBIL-FunPark offers 90,000 m² of opportunities for climbing, balancing and playing. In bad weather, the 5,000 m² glass-enclosed HOB-Center provides an indoor alternative, with life-size PLAYMOBIL scenes, extensive play areas, a show stage, themed dining and a coffee bar. Other interests are catered for by cultural sites, hikes and cycling routes. You can plan your stay around the focus you prefer, without combining the destinations into a fixed route.
