The Green Market, trails exploring Germering’s local history and the leisure facility on Starnberger Weg showcase three different sides of Germering. When choosing your accommodation and planning your days out, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on: local history, market dates or outdoor activities.
Local history in a range of formats
The ZEIT+RAUM Museum presents Germering’s history in a permanent exhibition and traces the town’s development through original finds. The museum trails lead from the museum at the town hall to significant archaeological sites and interesting places connected with Germering’s local history. The “Time Travel through Germering” geocaching tour follows these trails and works like a scavenger hunt. You can take it on your own or in small groups, for example with your family.
The archaeological and historical trails can be explored on foot or by bike, as well as with a stroller or wheelchair. The ZEIT+RAUM Museum is listed as open on Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m.; check the opening hours before your visit.
Markets and town festivals on the calendar
The weekly “Green Market” takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., but at different locations: Saturdays at the market square by the town hall (Untere Bahnhofstraße/corner of Landsberger Straße), and Wednesdays at the Volksfestplatz (Kleinfeldstraße). This gives you a choice of a weekday or weekend market if you want to plan your visit around it. Stalls offer fruit and vegetables, mostly from the surrounding region and from organic farms, as well as meat and cold cuts, cheese, fish, baked goods, antipasti, dressings and flowers.
The Germering Town Festival is another reason to visit: once a year, the town and its clubs invite visitors to a three-day festival on Therese-Giehse-Platz in front of the town hall. The market is a clearly defined morning event, while the three-day festival provides a wider timeframe for your stay. If you’d like to plan your trip around it, check the town’s event calendar for current dates.
By the lake and at the leisure facility
Germering Lake is generally an unsupervised swimming area, so take care when swimming. In the recreation area around the lake, the GehölzErlebnisPfad (Woodland Discovery Trail) shares information about native trees and shrubs at four stations.
The leisure facility on Starnberger Weg has areas for skateboarders and scooter riders, a pump track for all kinds of non-motorized wheeled vehicles, and a streetball hoop.
Culture in the wider FĂĽrstenfeldbruck destination
The wider Fürstenfeldbruck destination offers further cultural experiences in their own right. The Fürstenfeldbruck Museum is housed in the former monastery brewery and explores, among other things, the work of the Cistercian order’s “white monks.” The Fürstenfeld monastery complex is home to the Abbey Church of the Assumption of Mary, considered one of the country’s most magnificent Baroque churches. The Veranstaltungsforum Fürstenfeld hosts markets, trade fairs and balls, as well as performances spanning early music and the Piano Summer Festival to blues, jazz, dance, shows and cabaret. The specific program varies.
