Au i.d.Hallertau brings together two clearly distinct themes for planning a trip: outdoor trails and local history centered on hops and the market town. You can plan your stay around whether you would rather stroll by the water, follow a signposted route or get to know the town on a guided tour. The activities also differ in form: the fishponds invite you to linger, the Bockerl Cycle Path is a cycling and hiking trail, and the traditional market tour explores the town center through historical and contemporary topics.
Fishponds, cycle path and market tour
At the edge of the Tannet forest, the fishponds invite you to stroll and linger in both summer and winter. This makes them a place to visit in more than one season. The Bockerl Cycle Path is another option for getting around on two wheels or on foot: about two kilometers of this cycling and hiking trail between Au i.d.Hallertau and Enzelhausen run through the Au market area. This section can be reached via four access points: Bahnleite, Maria-Eich-StraĂźe, Keltenweg and Fischweiher. The path is well signposted. The figure of about two kilometers refers to the section in the market area, not the length of the entire trail between the two towns. Check local access and trail conditions before your visit.
The traditional market tour has a different focus. It leads through the clearly defined town center, along old streets, past the castle and the Abens River. Topics include the history of hop cultivation, the visit of “Ludwig the Bavarian,” as well as current and contemporary themes. This lets you plan the route through town and the tour’s subject matter together.
The German Hop Route offers another perspective on hops: heading north, it passes Au i.d.Hallertau via Zolling and Attenkirchen. Its route differs from that of the traditional market tour, which goes through the town center. Comparing the two can help you decide whether you are interested in the route of the German Hop Route or a guided look at Au.
Freising: nature and culture
The Amper Valley is in the Freising district and is a distinct nature destination within Freising. It is designated as a landscape conservation area and is used for hiking and cycling. The valley is home to numerous animal and plant species that are especially worthy of protection, including four of the 16 dragonfly species in Bavaria threatened with extinction.
Freising also offers a distinct cultural focus. On the Domberg, Freising Cathedral features a crypt and the Beast Column. The historic old town includes burghers’ and canons’ houses, ranging from Gothic to Baroque, around Marienplatz; a Marian column dating from 1674 also stands there. The Freising City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history. Together, sacred architecture, the urban landscape and the collection offer different ways to explore Freising’s history.
