Moosburg a.d. Isar combines urban history with a river landscape where the Isar and Amper meet. Different local highlights can help you plan your trip: culture at the local history museum and St. Kastulus Minster, a stroll through the old town, and travel by train. The wider Freising destination also offers its own culture, nature and cycling themes.

Culture and the Old Town in Moosburg

The Moosburg City Local History Museum is housed in the former convent school at Kastulusplatz. Its extensive collection spans from prehistoric times to the modern era and includes prehistory and early history, local history, trades, crafts, agriculture and folk art. This places early periods alongside the town’s development and themes from working and everyday life. The museum therefore offers a broad cultural and historical focus.

St. Kastulus Minster was formerly a collegiate church. The carved high altar was created by Landshut sculptor Hans Leinberger in 1511. The minster thus provides both a historical link to Moosburg’s ecclesiastical history and a specific art-historical reference point. By contrast, the local history museum takes visitors through several periods and subject areas.

The historic old town offers shops and weekly markets for a stroll. The Moosburg Christkindlmarkt is held every year on the second and third weekends of Advent at the Zehentstadel. If the market is the reason for your trip, check the specific dates for that year in advance.

River Landscape and Getting There

The Isar and Amper meet in Moosburg, forming alluvial forests and green strips around the town. This landscape adds another perspective on the place to its cultural and historical highlights.

Moosburg is a Regional Express stop on the Munich–Regensburg railway line and is part of the Munich Transport and Tariff Association (MVV). As a guide for train travel, the journey takes 35 minutes from Munich Central Station and 12 minutes from Landshut; journey times may vary. Check current connections and fares before you travel.

The city of Freising also has its own cultural highlights: Freising Cathedral on the Domberg features a crypt and the Beast Column. The city museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history. Around Marienplatz, the historic old town includes townhouses and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic to the Baroque period; a Marian column dating from 1674 also stands there.

The Schafhof in Freising is a center for contemporary art in Upper Bavaria and exhibits works by international and local artists throughout the year. Its annual events include the Johannismarkt and Advent market, where selected artisans present high-quality one-of-a-kind pieces.
