Gößweinstein Castle rises above the town of the same name in Franconian Switzerland. Together with the basilica, pilgrimage museum, hiking trails and activities on the Wiesent, it gives the town a range of focal points for a trip. You can focus your stay on pilgrimage history and architecture, or put hiking, climbing and water-based activities at the centre of your plans.
Basilica, Pilgrimage Museum and Castle
The basilica is visited by more than 160 pilgrimage groups each year. This number may change over time. Right next to the Baroque church by Balthasar Neumann, the Gößweinstein Pilgrimage Museum is located in the Holy District. It is housed in a former sacristan’s house dating from the 18th century. The church and museum are therefore right next to each other.
The centrepiece of the collection is more than 100 life-size human figures, mostly made of wax. They are connected with votive offerings that were placed there over the course of centuries. The buildings, church and collection thus offer different ways to explore Gößweinstein’s pilgrimage history: through the Baroque church, the former sacristan’s house and the figures made from votive offerings.
The castle also shapes the town with its elevated position. It can be explored independently, but is currently closed. The castle is also a destination on the Balthasar Neumann circular hiking trail; the option to explore it independently does not mean it can be accessed while it is closed.
Hiking, Climbing and Kayaking
The Balthasar Neumann circular hiking trail follows roads and paths in and around Gößweinstein. Its destinations include the Kreuzberg pilgrimage site, Gernerfels, Gößweinstein Castle, Wagnershöhe and Fischersruh. The route therefore connects several named places and landscape features; it expressly does not remain within the town centre.
If you would rather plan a water-based outing than a hike, Leinen Los offers an early-bird kayak tour. It starts at Behringersmühle station in Gößweinstein, follows the river past Sachsenmühle to Muggendorf and is around 8.2 kilometres long. The route features easy whitewater and is also suitable for beginners. The offer runs from May to September; check availability for your preferred date before your trip.
Kayak tours on the Wiesent are also available from Leinen Los. Visitors can play soccergolf and disc golf at the event grounds in Gößweinstein; they can also learn archery in a taster course. Availability of these activities may vary, so it is advisable to check before making specific plans.
For swimming, the Gößweinstein Höhenfreibad is a natural bathing area with biological water treatment. It is designed as a swimming and bathing pond. The Gößweinstein market area also has well over 400 established climbing routes. In addition to the circular hiking trail and kayak tour, there are therefore other standalone options for outdoor activities.
