The moated castle has shaped the townscape and history of Taufkirchen (Vils) for centuries. Other highlights include art stops, two markets held on different dates, and Lain am See, a natural swimming lake within the municipality. When planning your stay, you can first decide which theme matters most: castle and local history, a visit to a market, or nature by the water. If you are planning your trip around an event, check that the dates fall within your travel period.

Castle History and Art in Town

The Castle Tour passes, among other places, the moated castle in Taufkirchen (Vils). One stop on the SkulpTour is behind the town hall, at the sculpture “Bierblumentanz” (Beer Flower Dance). This gives you a choice of different cultural themes: the historic building and a named sculpture. The castle chapel inside the moated castle can accommodate 20 people.

The Zwergerlwald (Dwarf Forest) also has its own story. A chapel there was built in 2001 and consecrated in 2002; it was donated by Andreas Fortner from Taufkirchen. More than 500 dwarfs can be seen in the Zwergerlwald, many of them donated. The forest is currently inaccessible due to construction work on the Taufkirchen (Vils) bypass. Check the latest information before planning a visit.

Markets Held at Different Times

The Adlberger Markt, Taufkirchen’s oldest goods market, is held every year on the weekend before Pentecost. During the market, Landshuter Straße between Marktplatz and Hierlhof, as well as Bräuhausstraße, become a market, promenade and entertainment district. These named streets define the market’s clearly specified setting in town.

The TaufKirtamarkt is held at the Wasserschloss Taufkirchen during the traditional Bavarian Kirchweih weekend around the third Sunday in October. The two markets therefore differ both in timing and venue: the Adlberger Markt takes place before Pentecost and spans several streets, while the TaufKirtamarkt is held at the moated castle in October. If a market visit is the reason for your trip, check the latest event information against your travel dates.

Nature in the Municipality

Lain am See, also known as Lainer Weiher, is within the municipality of Taufkirchen (Vils). The lake is a natural swimming lake fed by spring water. It is the only pond in the district of Erding with an adjoining campsite. This makes the site notable both as a natural swimming lake and for a feature unique across the entire district.

More Cultural Themes in the Wider Destination of Erding

The wider destination of Erding offers other distinct cultural attractions. The Erdinger Bauernhausmuseum (Erding Farmhouse Museum) presents the historic rural way of life and farming practices of the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum includes 15 historic buildings relocated from the district of Erding. Its focus is therefore on rural history, while in Taufkirchen the moated castle and local history, among other things, shape the way the town is experienced.

The former home and studio of Franz Xaver Stahl is also in the wider destination of Erding. The Biedermeier house dates from around 1840 and is furnished with historic furniture; the former studio has been preserved unchanged since Stahl’s death. In Erding, a guided tour of the town tower takes you through one of the city’s oldest buildings. After climbing 163 steps, you reach a height of 35 metres. From there, the view extends across Erding and the surrounding area to Munich, and, in clear föhn conditions, as far as the Alpine panorama.
