Schwabhausen offers several clearly distinct points of interest to help you plan your stay: the S2 S-Bahn line, traces of Celtic settlement, memorial sites and municipal sports facilities. When looking for a hotel in Schwabhausen, you can use your interests as a guide. The town’s history appeals to culture enthusiasts, while the sports facilities and seasonal nature themes offer other possibilities.
Plan your arrival and stay
Schwabhausen itself and the district of Arnbach are on the S2 S-Bahn line between AltomĂĽnster and Dachau. If the line is important in choosing where to stay, check the current timetable before making a specific trip; services and times may change.
Local history between church and memorial plaque
St. Michael is Schwabhausen’s parish church. The remains of a Celtic earthwork are located northwest of the church and provide evidence of Celtic settlement. This settlement activity is dated approximately to the period from 500 to 15 BC. A memorial plaque at the present-day “Zur Post” restaurant commemorates the official farewell to Pope Pius VI in Schwabhausen. The “Obern Tafern” is also part of the town’s history: today it is the Gasthof zur Post, and in the past it was the most important place for travelers to stop in town.
Sports and recreation in town
At JahnstraĂźe 5, the sports complex includes the Heinrich-Loder-Halle as well as a beach volleyball court, facilities for bowls and boccia, a five-a-side soccer pitch and a pump track. Different forms of exercise and play are available side by side at the same complex. If you do not want to plan your stay solely around historical themes, you can also consider these activities.
A life-size chessboard, installed in 2018, stands between the town hall and the market square. It can be used free of charge and without prior registration; you can get the code for the chess pieces from the municipal administration.
Seasonal nature and the Blumenviertel
Lapwings return to the municipality of Schwabhausen every year from February. The males court potential mates with spectacular display flights and loud “Kie-witt!” calls. During the breeding season, stay on the paths and avoid causing disturbance.
A wildflower meadow is being created in the green corridor between Mohnblumenstraße and Blumenstraße. A total of 240 flower bulbs were planted there; in spring, daffodils, crocuses and snowdrops can be seen. A field path leads into Schwabhausen’s Blumenviertel and ends at Kornblumenstraße.
More themes in the Dachau destination
The Dachau destination also offers nature and culture themes with their own distinct appeal. Karlsfelder See lies right next to the built-up area of Karlsfeld-Nord, covers 58.2 hectares and is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling and recreation. In the town of Dachau, the Gemäldegalerie’s permanent collection features landscape and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Bezirksmuseum Dachau presents the cultural history of the town and district. This gives you the opportunity to balance different interests in local history, nature and art history during your stay.
