In Haimhausen, two different discoveries come together: Bründl Chapel, a distinctive building, and a named cycling tour that starts and ends in the town. Nearby, the Church of the Assumption in Inhausen offers another architectural destination. You can plan your stay around culture, cycling, or a combination of the two.

Chapel, church, and cycling tour around Haimhausen

Bründl Chapel is built of stone and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Construction began in 1734. Its dedication, building material, and construction date give the structure a distinct historical character and make it a cultural point of interest in Haimhausen in its own right.

The Mühlensee Family Cycling Tour is a 23-kilometre cycling route that starts and ends in Haimhausen. The name identifies the tour; its length and start and end points help distinguish it as a cycling option in its own right. The tours in the cycling guide are not signposted. The guide was compiled in 2020, and conditions may have changed. Before setting out, check the current route and do not rely on signposts alone.

The Church of the Assumption in Inhausen is near Haimhausen. Its exterior is characterised by Late Gothic features, while the interior has a unified Late Baroque design. This offers a distinct architectural comparison: at Bründl Chapel, the building style, dedication, and construction date are its defining features; in Inhausen, the contrasting designs of the exterior and interior stand out.

More cultural and landscape highlights in the wider Dachau destination

In the wider Dachau destination, other independent attractions complement Haimhausen’s local highlights. Karlsfelder See in the Dachau district covers 58.2 hectares and lies right beside the built-up area of northern Karlsfeld. It is used year-round for walking, jogging, cycling, and recreation. Another landscape highlight is the approximately 2.5-kilometre-long “Lebensader Maisach” trail: it follows the Maisach River and is accessible without barriers from Bergkirchen or Günding.

Nature watching is another option in the wider Dachau destination. On a walk in the Amper floodplains, patient visitors may be lucky enough to spot the feeding traces of the beaver, which has returned to the area. Karlsfelder See is a place for various year-round leisure activities, while the Amper floodplains offer the chance to look for signs of an animal. These are different nature experiences, not variations of the same route.

On Petersberg near Erdweg stands a Romanesque basilica built in 1104 and preserved to this day. The Petersberg Sculpture Trail is 200 metres long, runs through Petersberg Forest, and has eight stops featuring a total of ten works of art. Here, a historic building and a short art trail are two separate cultural attractions.

In Altomünster, the permanent exhibition at the Altomünster Museum presents the history of the Bridgettine Order in Europe and its founder, Saint Bridget of Sweden. One example is the now-closed Altomünster Monastery, which existed for 500 years. The middle route of the “7 Monasteries Trail” cycling route also leads to Altomünster, which was home to a Bridgettine monastery for centuries, and to Petersberg near Erdweg.

Those interested in urban and everyday history will find exhibits across three floors at the Dachau District Museum covering settlement patterns, town history, guild and market rights, crafts and trade, everyday life, festive customs, and popular religious culture. The permanent collection at the Dachau Picture Gallery has a different focus: landscape and genre paintings from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Dachau Palace was once a popular summer residence of the Wittelsbach family. Climbing up to the palace rewards you with views across the Munich gravel plain, the state capital of Munich, and as far as the Alps. Guided tours take place regularly at the palace; current dates are announced in advance. Check them before your visit.

Bründl Chapel and the family cycling tour are associated with Haimhausen, while the Church of the Assumption is nearby. The lake, trails, museums, and palace are separate highlights in the Dachau destination. For the cycling tour and palace tours, it is worth checking the current route and announced dates, respectively.
