Roding brings together a variety of things to discover: traces from different centuries can be found at the cemetery wall and in the chapels, while sports and nature experiences take centre stage at Esper. You can tailor your stay to whichever aspect interests you most.

Art and history in Roding

The Roding Dance of Death fresco on the cemetery wall was probably created around the middle of the 17th century, based on an earlier model. This dating is approximate; at the same time, it points to the work’s earlier model.

The Josefi Chapel originally served as the baptistery of Roding’s original church, which dates from the 7th or 8th century. The upper floor, added later, contains frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries, executed using Romanesque and Gothic fresco-secco techniques. The chapel thus brings together an early ecclesiastical function and medieval wall paintings.

The Anna Chapel is also connected with the old cemetery wall: it is built onto the wall and replaced an earlier building around 1650. Together with the Dance of Death fresco, it forms a distinct point of interest for anyone interested in religious art and historic buildings.

The Roding Fire Brigade Museum offers a different perspective on history. Spread over two floors, it displays more than 250 historic firefighting tools, uniforms and documents. The collection brings together technical objects, clothing and written records to provide a varied insight into the history of the fire brigade.

At the Fronfeste Cultural Centre, the programme includes changing exhibitions, theatre, films and cabaret. This adds a cultural programme in a variety of formats to the historic sites. If you want your stay to coincide with a particular event, check the programme in advance.

Leisure and nature at Esper

The leisure area at Esper is located right by the River Regen and offers activities for different age groups. The area includes a skatepark with a mini-ramp, ledges and a box. These features give a concrete idea of what the skatepark has to offer.

The Jungle Arena consists of a climbable dome structure and an octagonal net shaped like a pyramid. The structure is more than six metres high and offers views of the surrounding trees and the Regen floodplains. The adventure course is designed for children and teenagers. This makes it a different kind of activity at Esper from those centred on wheels or flying discs.

The disc golf course combines sport, nature and strategy. On the course by the River Regen, metal baskets with chains serve as targets. When choosing between the activities, the type of activity itself is a useful distinction: the skatepark and disc golf offer a different focus from the climbing course.

There is also a water experience platform directly by the Regen, designed for enjoying nature. It provides a quieter contrast to the sports facilities. Esper therefore offers both specific activities and a place where the river landscape takes centre stage.

Planning your stay

There is a digital information point outside the Roding Tourist Information Office. You can use it to explore attractions, events and other activities interactively. The Tourist Information Office also provides leaflets about leisure activities, hiking and cycling maps, and an up-to-date town map. If you need a particular map for planning, it is best to check its availability in advance.

There are two distinct ways to experience Roding: historic chapels and cultural activities on the one hand, and leisure options at Esper on the other. You could also combine both themes; it is best to plan specific activities around the dates that interest you.
