Hiking trails with varied landscapes and a themed trail about human rights give Viereth-Trunstadt clear highlights to explore. There is also the Heldenhain in Trunstadt, whose origins can be dated precisely. The trails range from woodland sections and rest areas to viewpoints overlooking the Main Valley.

Hiking trails with different highlights

The VT 5 circular hiking trail leads around the quarry southwest of Viereth. It starts in Froschgasse at the foot of Weiherer Berg and runs towards Tütschengereuth. A signposted detour via Lange Wies’n to Zigeunerbrünnlein, about 600 metres away, is possible. From the hilltop in the direction of Viereth, there are panoramic views across the Main Valley as far as the Franconian Jura. Signage and local conditions may change; check them before setting out.

The VT 1 circular hiking trail between Trunstadt and RoĂźstadt follows well-maintained farm and forest tracks through the mixed woodland of Eichenrangen. After about one kilometre, there is a shelter. After just over an hour of walking, the trail offers panoramic views of the Main Valley and the foothills of the HaĂźberge hills. The trail description thus specifies both a place to rest and the walking time to the viewpoint.

The VT 3 focuses on the stream and woodland: the circular trail between Viereth and StĂĽckbrunn follows the Viehbach stream towards Hohe MĂĽhle and takes a signposted path through Wolfskehln and Hauholz. Along the way, there is a shelter in a quiet location and several places to rest. The VT 4 leads through Brandsenke in Weiherer Wald; the starting point given is the car park at KundmĂĽller Brewery. The two routes therefore differ in the landscape features and starting points mentioned.

The VT 6 panoramic hike passes through all the districts of the municipality of Viereth-Trunstadt and offers views of the Main Valley and the surrounding villages. The trails’ viewpoints each offer something different: from the VT 5, the view extends as far as the Franconian Jura; the VT 1 also looks towards the foothills of the Haßberge hills, while the VT 6 takes in the surrounding villages.

Themed trail and local history

The Path of Human Rights starts at the town hall in Viereth and first leads to the parish church of St. James. At 30 stations, it presents the articles of the human rights, some in abridged form. The trail is intended for school classes and families; guided tours can be requested from the municipality. Its thematic focus sets it apart from trails whose descriptions mainly highlight the landscape and views.

The Heldenhain in Trunstadt is another historical landmark. It was laid out in 1937 under district architect Peter Rothmund, a son of Trunstadt, with an avenue of hazel trees. The date, designer and avenue are all part of the site’s history.

More topics in the wider Bamberg destination

The wider Bamberg destination also includes Schloss Weissenstein near Pommersfelden and the Ebrach Abbey complex. Schloss Weissenstein is one of Germany’s major Baroque complexes and houses an extensive gallery of art-historically significant works by French, Italian, German and Dutch painters. In the 18th century, Leonhard Dientzenhofer extensively remodelled the Ebrach Abbey complex into a castle-like Baroque complex; its Gothic church and rose window were preserved.

The Ebrach History Museum has been housed in the former Cistercian monastery since 2004 and explores the history of the market town and the monastery. A nature route is another topic in the wider Bamberg destination: the Methusalem Tour around Ebrach passes through the Spitzenberg Nature Reserve to trees up to 250 years old or older and up to 144 centimetres thick. Alongside the hiking trails and local history of Viereth-Trunstadt, the wider destination therefore offers distinct cultural and nature topics to explore.
