Fuchsstadt can be explored through three different themes: a circular walking trail leads to four chapels, the nature and culture trail leads to the municipality’s dream spot, and the local history museum brings together objects from many areas of local everyday life. This offers a choice of outdoor destinations as well as insights into the collection and local history.

Two trails with different destinations

The circular walking trail in Fuchsstadt leads to the Franzosenkapelle, Lauerbachkapelle, Kohlenbergkapelle and Dreifaltigkeitskapelle. These four named destinations make the chapels the focus of the route. The nature and culture trail has a different destination: it starts at the sports ground in Fuchsstadt and leads to the municipality’s dream spot. When choosing between the trails, you can decide whether you prefer the chapel circuit or the nature and culture trail, which ends at the dream spot.

Local history museum: from household items to technology

The collection in the barn at the Fuchsstadt Local History Museum includes household items, agricultural and craft tools, objects related to popular piety and technology, as well as items from the Fuchsstadt primary school. Its themes range from everyday objects and work to religious practice and school history. Artefacts from the Neolithic period are also on display at the museum; they are attributed to Fuchsstadt’s first farmers.

Guided tours of the local history museum explain some unusual ways items were used in the past: a laundry copper and laundry tongs were also used to cook sausages, and wood-grain paint was mixed with beer. A basic motor could be fitted with different attachments and used as either a vacuum cleaner or a hairdryer. These examples highlight how equipment and materials were put to different uses.

Planning a guided tour

From March to September, free guided tours are offered at the local history museum on the first Sunday of every month. Tours can also be arranged on request outside these dates. Check the current tour arrangements before travelling if you would like to plan your visit around a guided tour.

The different themes make it easy to choose between a trail and the museum: the chapel circuit leads to four named chapels, the nature and culture trail leads to the municipality’s dream spot, and the museum focuses on its collection and guided explanations. You can tailor your visit to the subject that interests you most, without assuming that the two trails share a route.

Fuchsstadt and the wider region

The Rhön is a short distance from Fuchsstadt, and Bad Kissingen and Hammelburg are quick to reach. There is also convenient access to the motorway for longer excursions. These details provide a general sense of the region, while the chapel circuit, nature and culture trail, and local history museum offer specific local themes.

Bad Kissingen is also relevant for a broader understanding of the area: the district of Bad Kissingen lies on the southern edge of the Rhön. The A7 between Fulda and Würzburg and the A71 between Erfurt and Schweinfurt cross the district from north to south. Since 1 January 2025, the district has been part of the Nahverkehr Mainfranken (NVM) transport network. This transport and regional information applies to the district of Bad Kissingen.
