In 1843, a burial ground dating from the 6th century with 448 graves was discovered in Nordendorf during construction of the Augsburg–Donauwörth railway line. A 19th-century construction project thus brought a much older archaeological find to light. The two dates serve different purposes: the 6th century dates the graves, while 1843 is the year of their discovery.

Historic Connections and Local History

The Via Claudia Augusta ran directly past Nordendorf and connected the fort with Augsburg and northern Italy. As a historic route, it adds another perspective on local history to the archaeological find: here, the focus is on a connection and its destinations.

Another historical milestone came in 1580, when Markus Fugger bought the castle in Nordendorf and a large part of the village. The purchase therefore involved not just a building, but explicitly included village property as well.

Another Place of Interest in the Municipality

The branch church of St. Agatha is located in Blankenburg, which belongs to the municipality. It dates from the mid-15th century, placing it chronologically between the 6th-century burial ground and the 1580 purchase. Blankenburg is a different place from Nordendorf itself.

Stadtradeln Dates Vary

Alongside its historical attractions, Nordendorf takes part in the annual Stadtradeln cycling campaign. Individuals and teams can log bicycle kilometres over 21 days to support climate protection. The exact dates vary from year to year; if you want to plan your stay around the campaign, check the dates for the relevant edition.

Hiking in the Wider Augsburg Destination

In the wider Augsburg destination, the LandArt-Kunstpfad Bonstetten is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking trail. Along the trail, the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. Its circular route and art focus add further points of comparison to its length.

The three-kilometre Meditation Trail runs from the Cistercian Abbey of Oberschönenfeld to Weiherhof, along the edge of the Schwarzachtal forest. Length and route type are easy to compare: the Meditation Trail is shorter and runs between the abbey and Weiherhof, while the LandArt-Kunstpfad is longer and follows a circular route. The trails also differ in their respective themes. At 5.65 kilometres, the LandArt-Kunstpfad is almost twice as long as the three-kilometre Meditation Trail.

The Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions are part of the Augsburg — Western Forests Nature Park. The district of Augsburg has a well-developed cycling network. Westwood Alpacas offers regular alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. Thus, in the wider Augsburg destination, cycling and alpaca excursions are available as distinct activity types alongside hiking trails.
