Wolframs-Eschenbach can be experienced from several perspectives through its fortifications, museums and hiking trails. Ditches, towers and walls point to the town’s history; a circular route around the old town combines literature with exercise. There are also other hiking options, six audio tours and a festival announced for 2027.
Urban History in the Townscape
The ditches, towers and walls of the fortifications were built mainly between 1332 and 1440. Their defensive character is still clearly visible at the Upper Gate.
Since 2023, alongside the Wolfram von Eschenbach Museum, there has also been a town museum presenting the town’s history. On the second floor of the town hall, there is a scale model of the old town showing how it looked at the end of 2000. The model depicts the old town at a particular point in time, while the town museum presents the history of the town: two different ways of exploring the local story.
Hiking Trails and Literature
Five Minnesinger hiking trails lead around Wolframs-Eschenbach. All five are well signposted and lead to places of interest. The Two-Town Trail runs between Wolframs-Eschenbach and Merkendorf. When choosing a route, you can decide whether you’re looking for trails around the town or a connection between two towns.
One clearly described circular route is the certified “Literature Trail Franconia” accessible hiking trail around the old town. The barrier-free trail is 2.2 km long and features 15 panels about authors whose works deal with Franconia. The panels bring the literary connection to life along the way.
Six different audio tours give visitors and local residents the chance to explore the medieval town and its surroundings. The audio offering also draws attention beyond the old town to the surrounding area. This means you can choose between signposted hiking trails and audio tours.
A Festival as a Reason to Travel
The Oldietown Festival in Wolframs-Eschenbach is scheduled for 2027 and takes place every two years. The program includes rock ’n’ roll, rockabilly, a nostalgia market and classic cars, as well as numerous bands on seven stages in the old town. If you’re planning your trip around the festival, check the exact event dates before making arrangements.
More to Explore in the Wider Ansbach Destination
In Königshofen, the “weighing & measuring” museum displays more than 4,000 exhibits: historic scales and their weights, cubits, yardsticks, and vessels used to measure grain. The Löhe and History Trail in Neuendettelsau focuses on the 19th century and the work of Pastor Wilhelm Löhe. Its stops lead through Neuendettelsau and to the churches in Reuth and Wernsbach; each stop has an information panel.
Another attraction in the wider Ansbach destination is Frankenhöhe Nature Park. It covers about 1,100 km² and lies within the districts of Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. Thanks to its landscape, the nature park is particularly well suited to recreation and offers information on hiking and cycling trails as well as ranger tours.
