Windelsbach’s historic town center, St. Martin’s Church, and nature destinations throughout the municipality offer different ways to plan a visit. Not all the listed sights and activities are in the main village; keeping this distinction in mind can help you tailor your stay to the topics that interest you.

Town Center, Long-Distance Trade, and Church

The historic town center of Windelsbach dates back to the 8th century. At that time, the village, then known as Binoldsbach, was a crossroads for two long-distance trade routes. The town center includes, among other landmarks, the Margrave’s Castle. Windelsbach’s St. Martin’s Church houses a valuable altar from the workshop of Nuremberg artist Michael Wohlgemuth. The village’s history thus connects early trade with a clearly identified work of art. Visitors are welcome to attend services at the church.

In Windelsbach, visits, tours, and group tours with Martin Kost are available. He is considered one of the last comb makers in Germany. Advance registration is required for visits and tours. If you are interested in crafts, you can plan this appointment as a cultural activity in its own right.

History in Other Districts

There are also historically significant destinations outside the main village. In Nordenberg, the castle was the seat of the Imperial Kitchen Masters from the mid-12th century until 1383; it was destroyed in 1408. Today, a ruin and imposing ramparts are reminders of the site. In Preuntsfelden, St. Nicholas Church stands on a hill. A predecessor chapel in what was then called “Brungartsfelden” was first mentioned around 1330. These places offer a broader view of the municipality’s history beyond the town center.

Landscape and Trails

The main village of Windelsbach lies between two lakes. Gently wooded hills, green meadows, and small streams shape the surroundings, and hiking trails lead through the landscape on outings. The municipality of Windelsbach is in Frankenhöhe Nature Park, where hiking and cycling routes, as well as walking paths, are available. The European Watershed Trail also passes through the municipality. The municipality’s barefoot and nature discovery trail is 1.5 kilometers long.

The upper reaches of the Altmühl are also part of the landscape in the municipality: the stream is largely unmodified and is bordered by alder trees and tall-herb vegetation. The flat floodplain is characterized by grassland and, in places, wet meadows. If you would rather focus on water than trails, Nordenberg has a natural bathing spot with an area called “Experience Water.” Check whether this facility is available before you travel.

Festivals and Other Activities

Festivals in Windelsbach include the parish fair, Advent market, and rural youth festival. Preuntsfelden hosts a vintage tractor gathering every two years. If you want to plan your trip around a festival, check the relevant event dates in advance. Horse riding with Knabstrupper horses and vaulting are also offered in Preuntsfelden; contacting the organizers in advance is recommended to arrange the activity.
