Edelsfeld offers named trails on the Hahnenkamm, the Goglhof open-air museum and old sunken lanes. When planning your trip, it is worth comparing the different routes: alongside a 600-metre wildlife trail, there are circular trails of around three kilometres and an educational trail between Schönlind and Eberhardsbühl. Cyclists will also find a named point of reference in Route 3 of the Simultankirchen cycle route.

Trails on the Hahnenkamm and beyond

The Kneipp trail starts on the Hahnenkamm, by the five pillars dedicated to Sebastian Kneipp at the sports grounds. The circular route is around three kilometres long. The 600-metre wildlife trail is incorporated into the three-kilometre Kneipp circular hiking trail in Edelsfeld. Life-size, true-to-nature depictions of native forest animals line the wildlife trail. This means you can choose between the full circuit and the shorter section featuring the animal depictions.

The Upper Palatinate Bee Educational Trail offers another option: it is three kilometres long and runs from Schönlind to Eberhardsbühl. Unlike the Kneipp trail, it is described as a connection between these two places. Those comparing trail lengths will find several options of a similar distance, but with different starting and ending points and a distinct focus on the wildlife trail.

Edelsfeld is also a specific point on a cycling route: the town lies on Route 3 of the Simultankirchen cycle route. The 24-kilometre discovery tour starts at the former Simultankirche St. Stephanus on Sulzbacher Straße. “Former” refers to the church’s status; the tour itself is another way to distinguish between Edelsfeld’s walking and cycling options.

Sunken lanes and farm history

The Goglhof open-air museum is located in the district of Eberhardsbühl. The historic farm is a three-sided courtyard built in the 17th and 18th centuries. Alongside its trails, Edelsfeld therefore also offers a tangible connection to local architectural history.

Old sunken lanes can be found on the forest track towards Sinnleithen and below the burial mounds on Steinlinger Weg. The sunken lanes on Steinlinger Weg run in the direction of Weißenberg. In the forest along the Steinlinger sunken lane, six to eight track traces can be identified on the descent from the Hahnenkamm to Edelsfeld. Between the new sports ground and the edge of town, the number is ten to twelve. The two sections therefore also differ in the number of track traces identifiable there.

The wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination

Within the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination, the Simultankirchen cycle route takes on a broader scope: it connects 49 places of worship in the central and northern Upper Palatinate, with ten day tours of varying lengths to choose from. Edelsfeld’s location on Route 3 is part of this regional cycling network, while the 24-kilometre discovery tour provides a specific connection to the town.

Within the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination, the Amberg-Sulzbach region offers imposing limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and charming river valleys for hiking.

Regional cultural traditions include the Kirwan festivals in the Amberg-Sulzbach region. Since 2023, they have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage; they are celebrated each year in the respective town, and both visitors and locals are welcome. If you would like to include a Kirwa in your trip, check the dates for the town in question.

Schlachtschüssel is also part of the region’s food culture: many inns in the Amberg-Sulzbach region serve it regularly. The dishes include Wurschtsuppn, boiled pork and blood, liver and bratwurst made according to the inn’s own recipes; dates vary from one inn to another. Alongside local trails and historic traces, Amberg-Sulzbach thus offers a regional perspective on culture and cuisine.
