For a stay in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, you can choose from a range of themes: local history, literature, mining or routes through the town. The town museum and literary archive offer insights into these subjects; marked circular hiking trails and the YSTORION Dragon Trail add outdoor routes to your plans.

Local history and historical collections

The town museum documents that Sulzbach was once one of the largest printing centres for Hebraica in Europe. It also covers the historical development of the Principality and town of Sulzbach, the Sulzbach Simultaneum, and mining and ironworks at the MaxhĂĽtte. Numerous exhibits and a reconstructed mine tunnel offer a glimpse into working conditions in mining and ironworking at the time.

From the 8th to the 12th century, Sulzbach Castle was an important seat of power in the Nordgau region and is one of Bavaria’s earliest medieval complexes. The history of the town’s fortifications can also be traced through distinct periods: the first town wall in the Sulzbach district was built around 1300 with four gates. A defensive wall built about 100 years later still survives in many areas. Since 2013, the former synagogue has been used as a municipal memorial and meeting place.

Literary archive and the history of pharmacy

The Sulzbach-Rosenberg Literary Archive preserves the original typescript of Günter Grass’s novel “The Tin Drum.” Its permanent exhibition offers insights into German-language literature after 1945, particularly the literary scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Exhibits include letters, galley proofs, photographs, video recordings and first editions. They are displayed across eight exhibition rooms on two floors.

The Alte Hofapotheke Museum offers a different perspective on local history, introducing visitors to half a millennium of pharmacy history in Sulzbach. On display are everyday objects—some intact and some damaged—from earlier generations, archaeological viewing windows and historic building fabric. Together, the museums offer different perspectives on the town, from literature and pharmacy to mining, rule and everyday life.

Mining trail and town walks

The Sulzbach Mining Trail offers two routes with different stops. The northern route leads, among other places, to the Karoline ore mine and the GroĂźenfalz powder magazine. The southern route includes Schlossberg, the MaxhĂĽtte viewpoint and Villa Max with its mine tunnel. The Max show tunnel at Villa Max can only be visited by prior arrangement as part of a guided tour. Plan your visit as a pre-arranged guided tour.

For circular walks within the town, there are Town Circular Trails No. 1 to 5. Marked with black numbers on a yellow background, they all start at Luitpoldplatz in the town centre. The YSTORION Dragon Trail offers a different focus: at six stops, QR codes provide access to mini audio dramas that tell the political, cultural, economic and social history of Sulzbach-Rosenberg. The trail passes through the renovated town moat, which also serves as a kind of open-air museum, with historic buildings as exhibits.

Gardens, nature and practical information

In front of the school museum is a school and teaching garden with more than 80 labelled native plants, shrubs and trees. The “Wüstung Großenfalz” nature reserve offers a contrast: on the site of the former village of Großenfalz, a biodiverse habitat with rare animals lies in an untouched natural environment.

As service information may change, it is advisable to check in advance. Sulzbach-Rosenberg station is a starting point for hikes and is particularly useful for users of the Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN).
