An easy circular hike of about 3.5 km is a tangible starting point for planning a hike in Obernheim. Other trails offer different highlights: they cross the Swabian Alb plateau, pass through a nature reserve or lead from the town centre to the Oberdigisheim reservoir. There are also chapels and religious traditions—a selection that lets you choose how to balance exercise, scenery and culture.

Circular Hiking Trails with Different Highlights

Obernheim has six newly signposted circular hiking trails to suit different tastes and ability levels, including options for children and seniors. One specific option is the circular trail to Heimbuch: this easy route is about 3.5 km long and starts at the car park by the sports facilities. It is suitable for families, walkers and those who enjoy a leisurely hike. This clearly defined walk can be distinguished from the other routes, whose main attractions are their scenery and views.

The “Over the Fohlenweg to the Schneckengarten” circular trail starts at the car park by the sports grounds in Obernheim. It follows well-maintained forest and meadow paths through the varied landscape of the Swabian Alb plateau. At the Schneckengarten, you can enjoy views over Obernheim and of the Scheibenbühl Chapel. The viewpoint is ideal for a break or photos, making it a specific destination along this route.

The Blütenweg is a circular route around Obernheim. The diverse plant life is especially evident there in spring and summer. The route passes through orchards, small patches of woodland and typical Swabian Alb pastures. The Rappenstein–Tanneck circular trail offers a different natural setting: it runs through the species-rich Stromelsberg/Hessenbühl nature reserve. Flora and fauna are among the scenic highlights of this route, which also passes through natural and cultural landscapes.

The Berg- und Talweg starts at the Catholic Church of St. Afra in the town centre. From there, it follows the BlĂĽtenweg down into the valley and continues to the Oberdigisheim reservoir, a popular destination for excursions and a peaceful spot. As an alternative to hiking, Obernheim also has mountain biking routes through varied landscapes.

Chapels and Religious Traditions

St. Wolfgang’s Chapel stands on the 947 m-high Scheibenbühl hill and rises above the surrounding village of Obernheim. The Pilgerhäusle, originally called “Bilgenhäusle,” was built around 1540 and dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is considered Obernheim’s oldest chapel. The Rosary has been recited in this building every Friday since 1873; the tradition continues to this day.

A mountain mass is held at St. Wolfgang’s Chapel every second Whit Monday, bringing together worshippers from the Balingen deanery. If you would like to plan your visit around this occasion, check the exact date before you travel. The parish church of St. Afra has a beautiful parish garden and is also the starting point of the Berg- und Talweg in the town centre. This makes it both a local cultural landmark and the starting point of a hiking route.

Landscape

Obernheim is part of the Upper Danube Nature Park, which covers around 1,492 km². Each local trail has its own focus: from forest and meadow paths on the Swabian Alb plateau to orchards and Alb pastures, as well as the flora and fauna of the Stromelsberg/Hessenbühl nature reserve.
