The Krai-Woog-Gumpen, also known as a glacial pothole, is a natural wonder from the Ice Age in the middle of the forest. Two stone basins lying close together, each around 2.70 metres in diameter, form the pothole. The basins were created during the Ice Age, when a glacier had to overcome a ridge of rock there.

Hiking trails between viewpoints and water

In Görwihl, numerous hiking trails pass viewpoints overlooking the Alps, follow the Höllbach waterfalls and lead through the Höllbach Valley with its unspoilt landscape. Near Görwihl, the Höllbach, a tributary of the Alb, plunges around 8.50 metres. A shady, peaceful circular hike starting at the Sägmooshütte in Görwihl can be combined with a visit to the Höllbach waterfalls. The route is around 3.5 kilometres long and is also easy to walk with children. This offers a distinction when choosing a route: the trails lead to several landscape features, while the circular hike has an approximate length and links to the waterfalls.

Crafts at the Görwihl Local History Museum

The saltpetre works at the Görwihl Local History Museum introduce visitors to the historic craft of saltpetre production. Saltpetre workers once collected crystallised saltpetre from stable walls and dung heaps; at the works, it was leached to produce potassium nitrate, an important raw material for making gunpowder. The display therefore traces the process from extracting the raw material to using it.

At 4.20 metres wide, the “Posamenterstuhl” is the last still-operational loom of its kind in the entire High Rhine region. It can weave up to 40 fine silk ribbons in a single operation. The two topics focus on different things: the saltpetre works explore a historic substance and its use, while the Posamenterstuhl showcases textile technology and the number of ribbons woven per operation.

Riddle trail and bird trail

Anni’s Black Forest Mystery starts at the Sägmooshütte and leads through the forest along the bird trail. The riddle backpack for the tour is available at the Eichrüttehof in Görwihl. It contains several locked boxes as well as all the clues and materials needed for the tour. Collection arrangements may change, so check them before your visit.

The Görwihl Bird Trail is an informative walk where children can learn about local birdlife and discover more about nature through play. The two activities have different focuses: Anni’s Black Forest Mystery is a riddle trail through the forest, while the bird trail centres on local birds and knowledge about nature.
