The 83.3-kilometre Albsteig premium hiking trail starts in Albbruck and follows the Alb upstream to its source on the Feldberg. Depending on your fitness level, you can hike the route as a sporty three-day tour or a more leisurely five-day tour.

Hiking trails with different route formats

The 13.2-kilometre Albbruck circular hiking trail passes through Schachen, Tiefenstein and Hohenfels before returning to Albbruck. The Albbruck village trail connects the town centre with its five districts along a route divided into several sections. You can choose from a long-distance hike to the source on the Feldberg, a circular route that returns to Albbruck, and a divided route linking the town centre and its districts. To compare them, start by considering the route format: the Albsteig combines duration and fitness level, the circular trail has a specified length and returns to its starting point, and the village trail is divided into several sections.

Gorge and nature trail

The Studinger Steg is a pedestrian route from Hohenfels to Schachen. A steep path descends into the Albtal gorge; the westward climb offers views of parts of the Hotzenwald and Switzerland. If you take scenery into account when choosing a route, you can also consider the change from descent to ascent here.

The Mühlbachtal nature trail lies in the Mühlbachtal Schachen nature reserve. It runs for about 1.5 kilometres through the Mühlbachtal. Eight stations offer insights into how forests, open land, wooded field margins and bodies of water form, are used and provide habitats for animals and plants. At about 1.5 kilometres, it is shorter than the 13.2-kilometre Albbruck circular hiking trail. The routes also have different focuses: the Studinger Steg highlights scenery and the change from descent to ascent, while the Mühlbachtal trail focuses on its stations and varied habitats.

Churches and milling technology

Albbruck has the Catholic Church of St. Joseph and the Protestant Christ Church. The parish church of the Holy Cross in Birndorf is an imposing village church with a history of almost a thousand years. It features Romanesque architecture; the differently designed capitals of its two rows of columns are particularly striking. A capital is the upper part of a column. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider the church’s long history, Romanesque style and capitals as different aspects of the building.

The Einungsmeister Mill is located in Unteralpfen. A large waterwheel turns on its west side, and a working millstone is located in the basement. The two sites offer different points of interest: Birndorf highlights history and Romanesque architecture, while the mill features its waterwheel and millstone.
