Castle history and forest trails offer two different ways to explore Gomaringen: the Castle and Gustav Schwab Museum focuses on local history and Gustav Schwab’s life, while a winding trail along the Erdmannsbach is part of the forest and viewpoint loop. Other options include a stream walk to former mills and a literary cycling route on which Gomaringen is one stop. When planning, it is worth first weighing up a museum visit, a hike or a longer cycling tour.
Gomaringen Castle and the History of the Town
Since 1998, the Castle and Gustav Schwab Museum has been run by members of the Gomaringen History and Antiquities Association (Geschichts- und Altertumsverein Gomaringen e.V.). A permanent exhibition presents many details about life and work in Gomaringen in the 18th and 19th centuries. The exhibition rooms are in the oldest part of the castle, dating from the 14th century. The exhibition’s local history is thus presented alongside the building’s historic fabric.
Gustav Schwab lived and worked in the castle during his time in Gomaringen. From 1837 to 1841, he served as a pastor and spiritual adviser in Gomaringen; the castle continued to be used as a rectory until 1993. Historic castle tours covering the castle’s history and its lords are part of the museum’s educational program. Tours of the exhibition “Life in Gomaringen in the 18th and 19th Centuries” are also offered; they provide insights into the working lives of Gomaringen’s residents.
The exhibition on Schwab offers a different perspective: visitors can trace his journeys on a map of Württemberg. A touchscreen provides travel accounts, verses and historical images relating to the stops on his travels. There is also the “Village Scavenger Hunt for History Detectives” for children in grades 2 to 4. It leads through Gomaringen in search of traces of the past, combining tasks and riddles with secret codes and hidden symbols.
The Wiesaz, Mills and Trails in the Countryside
A stream walk explores the remains of former mills. It explains how the Wiesaz was used, with reference to old mills, mill channels and the beginnings of electricity generation. The subject links the waterscape with the town’s industrial and technological history. Gomaringen’s network of circular trails includes six themed routes in total.
The forest and viewpoint loop is a circular route just over 5 km long. It runs mainly through shady woodland and is clearly signposted. Its moderate elevation gain is 130 m. The trail follows a winding path alongside the meandering Erdmannsbach. The listed starting points are the parking lot by the Buchbach recreation area and the Kohlgrube parking lot.
The Literary Cycling Route No. 6 covers a different scale: Gomaringen is one stop on the approximately 50 km circular route from TĂĽbingen through Reutlingen and Pfullingen to Gomaringen and back to TĂĽbingen. So, when choosing between the two routes, visitors can compare a local, signposted forest and viewpoint loop with a longer literary cycling tour. The routes differ not only in activity but also in length: a walk of just over 5 km versus a circular cycling route of around 50 km.
The Wiesaz Valley and the Wider Landscape
Gomaringen is nestled in the Wiesaz Valley. Nearby are recreational areas with orchards, woodland and the Albtrauf escarpment. This makes it possible to distinguish the town’s location in the valley from the landscapes awaiting exploration in the surrounding area.
The wider landscape context can be seen in the broader destination of Tübingen: Tübingen district stretches between the Schönbuch Nature Park, with its many forests and valleys, to the north and the Albtrauf escarpment to the south. The Neckar, Ammer and Steinlach rivers have cut through the district’s cuesta landscape, creating a varied region. Tübingen also has its own cultural highlights: the historic old town is characterized by half-timbered houses and narrow lanes. The Museum of Ancient Cultures at Hohentübingen Castle displays figurative artworks dating back 40,000 years, as well as the oldest musical instruments. These regional themes add to the picture of Gomaringen without replacing its local history and trails.
