There are two specific ways to experience Deißlingen during a stay: St. Laurentius Church combines a clearly dated building history with a distinctive tower and a work of art in the chancel; hiking options offer a second focus. Whether you want to center your visit on cultural history or outdoor activity, you can plan the two separately or choose according to the time available.

St. Laurentius Church: Building history and art

The present-day St. Laurentius Church was built in the early Gothic style. The previous church was demolished in spring 1880 while the present church was being built; the foundation stone of the Roman Catholic parish church in Deißlingen was laid on July 27, 1880. The demolition of the previous building and the laying of the foundation stone for the present church therefore mark two distinct events in 1880.

The tower measures 56.6 meters to its tip. The chancel features an abstract concrete-glass window by Romuald Hengstler. The tower’s height provides a concrete architectural reference point, while the window adds an abstract work of art to explore.

Choose a hike by distance and terrain

The signposted Neckar Trail passes through the center of Deißlingen. Its section from Deißlingen to Rottweil is rated easy, is 9.73 kilometers long, and takes about 2 hours 30 minutes. Check the current signs before setting out so your plans match the route information on site.

The Paradiestour Neckartäle leads to Deißlingen. It is 7.76 kilometers long, rated easy, and has almost no climbs. In direct comparison, it is shorter and virtually flat, while an approximate duration is given for the Neckar Trail section. You can make your choice based on distance, terrain, and the time available.

The name “Neckartäle” is also used for the section of the Neckar Valley Cycle Path near Dauchingen and Deißlingen. If you are looking for a trail by that name, it helps to distinguish this cycle path section from the Paradiestour.

Countryside in the surrounding area

One section of the Neckar Trail leads to a wildlife enclosure in the Eschach Valley. The second section follows the Eschach to its confluence with the Neckar near Rottweil; there, the Eschach flows in its natural bed. The two route descriptions draw attention to different aspects of the landscape: the path to a wildlife enclosure and the river as it reaches its confluence.

Eckhof is also nearby, in a nature reserve with extensive, continuous juniper heathland. This provides a refuge for endangered animal and plant species. The river landscape and juniper heath therefore offer different nature-themed excursions to consider when planning a trip around Deißlingen.

Culture in Rottweil

In Rottweil, the Unteres Bohrhaus Saltworks Museum presents salt production in original buildings, with original equipment, a waterwheel, and two brine pumps. It also explains the history and significance of the former Royal Saltworks of Wilhelmshall, described as Rottweil’s oldest industrial enterprise.

A different historical perspective is offered by the “Roman Rottweil – Arae Flaviae” section at the Dominican Museum. It takes visitors through a day in Roman Rottweil on August 4, 186 AD: from the forum in the morning through various public and private engagements to a feast in the evening. Reconstructions and interactive areas complement the exhibition. Visitors can also try on a Roman wool tunic, a chain mail shirt, a Roman soldier’s helmet or shield, and a Roman rider’s saddle; check the current availability of these hands-on activities before your visit. By contrast, the Saltworks Museum focuses on salt production and the former Royal Saltworks of Wilhelmshall.
