Moor Trail and Cycling Routes as Points of Interest

The Moor Trail south of Missen is about a special habitat: conservation area plans call for sunlit lowland and transitional moorland areas to be restored and developed as habitats for the marsh fritillary butterfly. This makes the connection to nature specific, linking the moorland areas to the protection of a particular butterfly species.

Several route descriptions also offer guidance for cycling trips towards Missen. One route runs from Urlau along Missener Straße to Missen. Another starts in Leutkirch, initially follows a paved cycle path to Urlau, and then continues along Missener Straße towards Missen. The paved section explicitly described is the stretch as far as Urlau; the next part is described as following Missener Straße towards Missen.

A cycling loop continues through Missen to Beuren. Just before Beuren, Badsee lake is a place to swim; a short stop at the pizzeria on the campsite is also planned. The loop therefore combines exercise with the possibility of a break. Swimming conditions and seasonal availability may change, as may nearby facilities. Check whether swimming and stopping for refreshments suit your plans for your visit.

Additions in the wider destination of Leutkirch im Allgäu

The wider destination of Leutkirch im Allgäu lies in a hilly foothills landscape between forests and ponds. Its hiking trails offer various points of interest: Circular Trail 1 passes Repsweiher pond and then enters Unterer Stadtwald forest. On the return to Leutkirch, Circular Trail 2 also passes Repsweiher pond. Siebenbrünnen on Circular Trail 1 offers a place to rest; hikers can refresh themselves there with cool spring water, although its availability may vary. A detour from Circular Trail 2 leads to Balterazhofer Höhe, with views of the Alpine panorama.

The wider destination also includes the 18-hectare Stadtweiher, a swimming lake in Leutkirch, and Kapf: at 886 metres, it is the highest point in Leutkirch. Another option is the Erlebnisweg trail. Its three stations offer activities for playing, picnicking and enjoying the views. The “Weitblick zur Galluskapelle” station features a viewing frame for Galluskapelle, a bicycle parking space, a slackline, a lounging bench and a relaxation lounger. Individual facilities at the stations may change.

For a cultural focus, the Glasiusweg, just over four kilometres long, follows the Eschach through the Adelegg; its starting point is in Schmidsfelden. The 16 interactive learning and play stations are designed for children and adults and present the history of glassmaking in the Adelegg. In the historic glassmaking village of Schmidsfelden, glassmaker Stefan Michaelis gives glassmaking demonstrations; check the dates in advance. The Schmidsfelden Glass Museum presents episodes from the area's glassmaking history and provides information about the history of the “glass barons” as well as ordinary workers. Along the Glasiusweg, the focus is on the history of glassmaking, while the museum highlights the different people involved.

Leutkirch's marketplace also offers a cultural point of interest: a bandstand concert is held there every week. Check the dates for your visit. There are several ways to choose between the options described: focus on moorland habitats and cycling routes around Missen, or on hiking trails, water and glassmaking culture in the wider Leutkirch area.
