Dingelsdorf offers several points of interest for a stay: the pile-dwelling exhibition, village and ferry history, the Dingelsdorfer Ried nature reserve and the lido. When planning your visit, you can easily distinguish between the different themes: you can focus on archaeological and architectural history or explore the landscape and enjoy swimming.

Pile-dwelling history and a precisely dated house pile

The pile-dwelling exhibition opened in Dingelsdorf Town Hall in 2011. It offers a vivid insight into Neolithic settlement on Lake Überlingen. A specific archaeological link is a house pile near Dingelsdorf–Klausenhorn: dendrochronology has dated it precisely to 3826 BC. This method determines the age of wood based on its sequence of annual rings.

Listed buildings and village culture

Dingelsdorf’s listed features include St. Nicholas Church, dating from 1493, the Hailig Creutz Chapel in Oberdorf, the Seemühle and the town hall. The town hall is a listed solid-built structure dating from 1713. The parish church has a three-part peal that is considered particularly valuable from the perspective of historic bell preservation.

Two half-timbered houses from the 17th century also have traditional former functions: Haus Romer was the guesthouse of Mainau; the Kudermannsches Haus served as a post office. The dates and building names offer different points of reference if you are interested in architectural and local history. The Narrenbrunnen (Fools’ Fountain) also stands in the village square; it was dedicated to the Ala-Bock carnival association in 1996. The association holds its annual Brunnenlauffest there. If you would like to plan your visit around this festival, check the dates in advance.

Ferry history at Klausenhorn

Fährmann-Klemens-Park commemorates Klemens Baumann, known as the “Old Man of the Lake.” Until 1888, Baumann operated the ferry service between the tip of Klausenhorn and Überlingen, crossed the lake about 50,000 times and rescued 17 people in distress. The lakeside grounds in Dingelsdorf were redesigned in 2013 and have since been called Fährmann-Klemens-Park.

Named places at Klausenhorn also tell of crossings in the past: the cross marked the destination of the crossing from Überlingen to Dingelsdorf. Remains of a landing stage dating from the Thirty Years’ War have been preserved at the crucifix. It was built from oak trunks and stones. The lakeside walk begins in Dingelsdorf at the landing stage of the White Fleet, making the starting point clear.

Ried, the lake and other destinations in Konstanz

Areas within the municipal boundaries of Dettingen and Dingelsdorf, both part of the city of Konstanz, have been designated the Dingelsdorfer Ried nature reserve. This wetland is home to rare plant communities and provides a habitat for numerous rare, protected animal and plant species. Dingelsdorf Lido offers a different way to enjoy the lake: it is set in natural surroundings directly beside a nature reserve, and you can swim in Lake Ăśberlingen there. Nature conservation and swimming are thus distinct attractions.

In the wider destination of Konstanz, the Lake Constance Natural History Museum offers a dedicated focus on natural history. It illustrates the formation of Lake Constance and its diverse habitats with animal exhibits and informative models. Petting animals, touch holes and animal calls at the push of a button invite visitors to take part. Konstanz also offers its own cultural attractions: a city walk takes in sights from Imperia to the Council Building, while the historic old town, with its picturesque lanes, is perfect for a shopping stroll. These attractions in Konstanz complement the experience of Dingelsdorf without replacing its local highlights.
