Zaisenhausen can be explored on two trails of different lengths: the 2.4-kilometre Historical Circular Walk and the 12-kilometre Great Panorama Trail. Other highlights include the history of the spa facilities in the Kohlbach valley, Roman traces and a Protestant church with twin towers. For planning your visit, you can choose between a short village-history walk and a longer hike.

Landscape and local history

Zaisenhausen lies in the Kraichgau hills. Loess and loess loam soils characterise the hilly landscape, while the Kohlbach meadow valley and smaller side valleys shape the terrain. Both the ridges and the valley areas are part of the village’s landscape. A Roman villa rustica is among the Roman traces in Zaisenhausen.

The history of the sulphur springs is also linked to the Kohlbach valley: they were discovered there in the 18th century. Later, spa facilities attracted bathers from a wide area. The village’s history therefore stretches from its Roman past to its former spa tradition.

A striking landmark is the Protestant church with twin towers. It was completed in 1836 and is known as the “Cathedral of the Kraichgau.” Visits to the interior of the church can be arranged by appointment in advance; contact the Protestant parish office before you travel to arrange a time.

Comparing the circular trails

The Historical Circular Walk is 2.4 kilometres long and starts and ends at Zaisenhausen railway station. It leads to 25 historically significant stops, with information boards about the village. One stop features the community wine press, dating from 1838. The trail also passes restored half-timbered buildings and hand-carved sandstone sculptures. This village walk combines a manageable distance with several stops devoted to local history.

If you are planning a longer hike, you can choose the Great Zaisenhausen Panorama Trail, a 12-kilometre circular route. By comparison, the 2.4-kilometre Historical Circular Walk is the shorter option and focuses in particular on the village’s history. The Panorama Trail, on the other hand, covers a greater distance. You can choose between them based on your preferred distance and interest in the historical stops.

A guided version of the Historical Circular Walk is also available. Before travelling, check how a guided tour can be arranged.

Getting here and spending time in the village

Zaisenhausen is served by the S4 light rail line between Karlsruhe and Heilbronn. Check the timetable before travelling so you can factor your arrival into your plans. The railway station is also the starting and ending point of the Historical Circular Walk.

The central village square has seating available year-round, a sandpit and space to relax and meet others. This offers a different way to spend time in the village than visiting the historical stops along a trail: the square provides a central place to relax, while the trails direct your attention to the landscape and local history.
