Östringen lies in the Kraichgau hills and is characterized by extensive forests, vineyards and traditional orchards. It is also home to a network of geo-trails, the publicly accessible sulfur spring and historic sites such as Stifterhof. If you are looking for accommodation, you can plan your days around different interests: hiking, natural attractions and cultural history each offer a different focus.
Geo-Trails with Different Routes
The geo-trail network includes the Brunnenweg around Östringen and the Hügelweg, which runs from Odenheim via Eichelberg and Tiefenbach. The Brunnenweg is approximately 13 kilometers long. This gives you the choice between a route around Östringen and one that connects several named places. For the Brunnenweg, its approximate length provides a useful guide when planning your hike; the Hügelweg is defined by its route through the various places.
Bus services from Eichelberg and Tiefenbach return to Odenheim after geo-trail excursions. If you are relying on the bus for your return journey, check the current timetable before setting out.
Natural Attractions in Tiefenbach and Krummbach Forest
The Kreuzbergsee recreation area is located in Tiefenbach, a district of Östringen; walking and cycling paths run around the lake. Another natural attraction is the sulfur spring in Krummbach Forest, about 500 meters north of Östringen. It is open to the public, and visitors can sample the spring water free of charge. The lakeside paths and the spring, with its accessible water, offer two different ways to enjoy nature.
Art, Church and Monastic History
The Gustav Wolf Art Gallery is dedicated to the artistic legacy of Gustav Wolf. He was a Jewish painter, graphic artist, etcher and lithographer. Regular temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists complement the tribute to his work with changing perspectives from the present day. The art program thus ranges from a single artist’s biography to current exhibitions.
St. Cäcilia Parish Church is a Neo-Romanesque building constructed in 1895. Its seven-bell peal includes two historic Baroque bells cast in 1709. The church’s construction date and the bells’ casting date point to different periods: the two bells are older than the church building.
The remains of the former 12th-century Wigoldesberg monastery complex are preserved at Stifterhof. Two defensive towers nearby indicate the complex’s former extent. Both the surviving remains and clues to the complex’s original size are therefore relevant to understanding its history.
Winegrowing and Getting There
Along with forests and orchards, vineyards are part of Östringen’s landscape. The Heitlinger VDP winery is located in the Tiefenbach vineyards. It farms slightly more than 100 hectares of vines, predominantly using biodynamic methods; the vineyard area and farming practices may change over time. Winegrowing is therefore both part of the landscape and represented by a specifically named winery.
Road connections for reaching the area include federal highway B 292 and motorways A 5 and A 6.
