Schwarzenberg combines traces of a vanished castle with two different hiking routes: the Baiersbronn Panorama Trail leads around Schwarzenberg, while the route “Fairy-tale: Baiersbronn-Schwarzenberg” passes through the village to the village square. You can tailor your stay to whether you are more interested in local history, views of the landscape, or a route through the village. This focus also offers a first guide when looking for a holiday apartment.

Castle Remains and Village History

Schwarzenberg Castle was first mentioned around 1085. Remains of the moat of the vanished castle have been preserved on Schloßberg. The village’s history took a different course: for centuries, Schwarzenberg consisted of just ten fiefdom farms. New farms were gradually added in the early 19th century. This means that two different timelines come together in a look at the village—the castle’s early mention and the later, gradual expansion of the farms.

Hiking Trails with Different Routes

The Baiersbronn Panorama Trail leads around Schwarzenberg and to several distinctive points. These include Verlobungsfelsen, a rocky outcrop, and the Schwarzenbach spring. From the section along Roten Rain, the route offers views of Schwarzenberg and its centuries-old fiefdom farms. Verlobungsfelsen also features in a local legend: it links the rock to a promise of marriage made at the time of the great logging operations around 250 years ago.

The hiking route “Fairy-tale: Baiersbronn-Schwarzenberg” follows a different course: it starts at Schwarzenberg stop, passes through Schwarzenberg, and ends at the village square. The difference is therefore less a matter of route length—no information on that is provided here—and more a matter of the route: one goes around the village, the other through it to a named destination. The Schwarzenberg playground with wading pool is close to the railway station. The tour “To the Panorama Hut in Schwarzenberg” also leads back to Schwarzenberg S-Bahn station; its description notes an hourly service for the onward journey to Schönmünzach, the starting point. Check the current timetable before setting out.

Baiersbronn as a Wider Travel Destination

Beyond Schwarzenberg, Baiersbronn offers further hiking and cultural attractions as a wider travel destination. The routes vary considerably in length and difficulty: the Baiersbronn Seensteig is an 89.29-kilometre hiking trail rated difficult. The Baiersbronn Tonbachsteig is 14.35 kilometres long, also rated difficult, and is a Black Forest “Genießerpfad” (premium trail). The Baiersbronn Satteleisteig is an 11.15-kilometre, moderately difficult Black Forest “Genießerpfad.” A shorter, easy-rated option is the 4.62-kilometre family hike “In the Valley of the Hammers.” Route details may change; check them again when planning your trip.

Baiersbronn’s cultural sites also each have their own distinctive character. Buhlbach Glassworks Cultural Park comprises the last historic glassworks buildings in the Black Forest. They tell the story of how the “Schlegel” was made from quartz sand, heat, sweat, and an innovative spirit. Public time-travel tours take place at 2:30 p.m. on opening days; check the current season before visiting. At the Hauff Fairy Tale Museum in Baiersbronn, visitors with an interest in literature can learn about the writer on their own or on a guided tour.

For a different activity, Baiersbronn has a 400-kilometre mountain-bike trail network with eleven tours. This makes it possible to expand your view beyond Schwarzenberg to include hiking, culture, or mountain biking, without conflating these regional attractions with the sights and trails in the village.
