Forest trails with different focuses, a listed grain mill and a market featuring produce from local farms give a trip to Freiamt distinct highlights. You can shape your plans around whether you want to focus on nature trails, local history, regional products or relaxation.
Forest Trails with Different Focuses
The Rollberg Forest Discovery Trail runs along forest and nature paths, is 2.5 km long and has 19 stations. It offers an active, fun way to learn about the forest ecosystem. The Rollberg Forest Fitness Trail has a different focus: it offers opportunities to train endurance, strength and coordination. With the extension loop, it is about 4.5 km long. Comparing the two routes directly, the Forest Discovery Trail is the shorter one; their themes also differ considerably.
Most of both Rollberg trails are accessible with a stroller and with a wheelchair when accompanied. Check conditions on site before planning your visit. Freiamt has four Nordic walking routes with a combined length of more than 24 km; see the latest route information for details. Guided hikes are regularly offered on Tuesdays from May to October. Typically, there is a shorter route of about 4–6 km and a longer one of about 8–10 km. Check the current calendar for specific dates.
The “Kreuzmoos” nature reserve in the Hünersedel area offers another perspective on nature. The 5.6-hectare reserve lies at an altitude of about 700 m and includes fen and wet meadow areas. Rare plants found there include round-leaved sundew, bogbean and marsh grass-of-Parnassus.
Mill History and Visiting Information
The listed Schillingerhof Mill in the Pechofental valley was built as a grain mill in 1802 and has been fully operational again since its restoration in 1997. Visits are possible by prior appointment. The Kniestein Chapel below Hünersedel was built in 1866 and adds to Freiamt’s historical points of interest.
There is an important restriction concerning the HĂĽnersedel Tower: it is closed until further notice because of structural defects, which must first be remedied through repair work. Do not plan to visit the tower as an accessible destination, and check whether its status has changed before your visit.
At the Freihof Museum in the district of Ottoschwanden, visitors can watch the schnapps maker distill spirits on the first Friday of each month. Since the demonstration takes place on a recurring schedule, confirm the details before visiting.
Market and Regional Produce
The Freiämter Farmers’ Market takes place on Fridays in the district of Ottoschwanden and has offered products from local farms since 1998. The selection includes fruit and vegetables, eggs, cheese, honey, homemade schnapps, bread and farmhouse ice cream, as well as other products. Opening hours are shorter in winter. If the market is an important part of your plans, take this seasonal difference into account and check the current opening hours.
Gardens, Mini Golf and Relaxation
An 18-hole mini golf course is located right next to the Kurhaus Freiamt. Its unique obstacles range in difficulty; the course operates seasonally, so check the latest details before visiting. The gardens at the Kurhaus include a colorful perennial garden, peonies, evergreen and winter-green shrubs, bulb plants, more than 1,000 daffodils and a heather bed.
There are also specific options for a wellness break: the sauna area in the Freiämter indoor swimming pool offers hourly infusions, a Finnish sauna at 90 °C and a steam room at 45 °C. Since operating information may change, check the latest details before visiting. A footbath facility for residents and visitors is located right by the Brettental hiking car park.
