Riegel am Kaiserstuhl brings together Roman archaeology, sacred history and geological insights. When looking for a hotel, you can first consider whether the museum and historic sites or Michaelsberg and the nature trail should play a greater role in your stay.

Archaeology and Roman Riegel

Riegel’s local history dates back around 7,000 years and is represented by numerous archaeologically significant finds. About 300 finds are on display in the award-winning Archaeological Museum. Museum Riegel is also dedicated to Regola, ancient Riegel, and everyday life in a Roman city north of the Alps around 2,000 years ago. The town’s long history and life in Roman times thus offer distinct perspectives.

A hippocampus, depicted on a terra sigillata drinking vessel, is the museum’s emblem. The remains of the former Mithraeum can also be visited alongside the museum exhibits. The Archaeological Trail includes the excavated Mithraeum, offering another way to explore Riegel’s Roman heritage.

Sacred history and landscape at Michaelsberg

St Michael’s Chapel is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the Emmendingen district. Late Gothic wall paintings came to light during interior restoration in 2008. As another testament to sacred history, the chapel complements the museum’s archaeological focus.

The landscape opens a window onto another era: the loess walls at the foot of Michaelsberg reveal an earth history spanning millions of years. The Riegel Michaelsberg Nature Trail offers a way to explore the area’s geological features. From the Michaelsberg viewpoint, the view stretches far across the surrounding region. Cultural history and landscape offer distinct focuses for your discoveries here.

Getting here and finding your way around

Riegel has two railway stations with connections to Deutsche Bahn’s Rhine Valley Railway and the Kaiserstuhl Railway. The Breisgau S-Bahn reaches Riegel-Ort from the direction of Freiburg or Breisach. The museum is about a seven-minute walk from Riegel-Ort station. Since train connections and stopping patterns may change, check your route before travelling.

It is also easy to plan your journey by car: Riegel is served by the A5 and the Riegel exit. Road conditions and access regulations may change; check them before setting off.

Theatre, hospitality and accommodation

The local cultural scene includes the kumedi theatre. Restaurants and inns offer hospitality throughout the year. The summer offerings include more than 600 beer garden seats and an ice cream shop known beyond the region. This seasonal addition differs from the year-round offerings of the restaurants and inns.

The history of the brewery site is also part of the local character: the Riegeler Lofts were built on the former site of the Riegel brewery, where hobby brewers make Römerbräu. Camping facilities are used by cyclists and hikers, including the campsite at Müllersee. If you are planning an overnight stay in Riegel am Kaiserstuhl, you can choose between searching for a hotel and considering the camping options also available, while keeping the cultural and landscape highlights in view.
