Möttlingen brings together several distinct highlights: an exhibition about Johann Christoph Blumhardt, church history, a long theatrical tradition, a landscape of meadows and fields, and a circular hiking trail. When choosing a destination, you can weigh up culture, local character and outdoor activity. The museum’s opening hours, the time needed for the trail and the date-dependent nature of the bakehouse offer are especially important for planning.

The Blumhardt Museum throughout the year

The permanent exhibition at the Gottliebin-Dittus-Haus presents the life and work of Johann Christoph Blumhardt. The Blumhardt Museum is open from April to October on the first Sunday of each month, from 14:30 to 17:00; group visits are possible by arrangement. From November to March, visits are possible by arrangement only. Admission is free; donations are welcome. If your stay focuses on the museum, take the time of year into account: during the season, it has a fixed monthly opening date, while visits during the winter months require prior arrangements.

The museum is housed in a listed building and is not wheelchair accessible. If you require step-free access, take this limitation into account when planning.

Church, theatre and local history

The church in Möttlingen was renamed “Blumhardt Church” in 1955. The gravestone of Gottlieb Friedrich Machtholf is set into its outer wall. The church’s name and the gravestone offer a different focus from the biographical exhibition.

The Veigelesbühne Möttlingen 1995 e.V. keeps Möttlingen’s long theatrical tradition alive and is particularly committed to preserving and nurturing the Swabian dialect. This extends the town’s cultural identity beyond its exhibitions and church history. The theatrical tradition and care for the dialect offer a different perspective from the biographical exhibition and the church connection.

Landscape and hiking

Möttlingen lies at an altitude of 535 metres in a picturesque hollow, surrounded by meadows and fields. Its elevation and open surroundings give the choice of destination a scenic dimension alongside its cultural attractions.

The forest adventure trail is an easy circular hike covering 14.17 kilometres and taking about 3 hours and 30 minutes. This means setting aside several hours for the hike when planning your day. The “easy” rating describes the level of difficulty, while the distance and approximate duration indicate the time required. The trail can therefore be considered a standalone hiking highlight alongside the museum and local history. The time information refers to different things: 14:30 to 17:00 is the museum’s opening window, while about 3 hours and 30 minutes is the estimated duration of the hike. When planning your day, read these as opening hours and tour duration, respectively.

Bakehouse: check dates

At an “Open Baking” event at the Möttlingen bakehouse, families could bake bread, pizza, flammkuchen or onion tart; the baking team provided a hot oven. If you would like to include this activity in your plans, check the event dates in advance: the offer and opportunity to visit depend on the date.
