Several distinct landmarks stand close together in the center of Munzingen: St. Stephen’s Church, the “Round Tower” as part of the former moated castle, Kageneck Castle, Hotel Schloss Reinach, a former estate, and the Schlossbuckhalle. Different construction periods can be distinguished at the parish church: the tower and choir date from the Late Gothic period, while the nave was remodeled and expanded in 1747. Munzingen Castle is considered a building that straddles the Renaissance and Baroque periods, as well as the most monumental of the former Upper Austrian manor houses in the Breisgau.

Chapels and vineyards on the Tuniberg

St. Erentrudis Chapel was rebuilt on the Tuniberg in 1870; St. Apollonia Chapel was its predecessor. At the southern end of the Tuniberg are the vineyards of the Clemens Lang winery, in the single vineyard site of Munzinger Kapellenberg. Alongside the buildings in the center of Munzingen, a chapel and a named vineyard site thus represent different aspects of local history.

Hiking and cycling

In the area around Munzingen, the 10-kilometer Tuniberg Höhenweg can be explored on foot or by bike. Along the way, it offers views of the Black Forest, the Vosges, and the Kaiserstuhl. The “Through the Vineyards on the Tuniberg from Opfingen to Munzingen” route ends in Munzingen. The highest point on the Tuniberg, at 312 meters, lies along the route through the vineyards; the route also passes St. Erentrudis Chapel.

After the tour, bus route 32 runs from Munzingen back to Opfingen. If you are planning this return trip, check the current timetable before traveling. Route conditions and signage, as well as outdoor conditions, may vary.

In the wider destination of Freiburg im Breisgau

The wider destination of Freiburg im Breisgau includes other distinct cultural and urban attractions. The Freiburg Documentation Center on National Socialism presents local history from 1918 to the present across three floors. Interactive exhibitions, a former air-raid shelter, and biographies of contemporary witnesses offer insights into Freiburg’s engagement with the Nazi era. The Augustiner Museum has an extensive art and cultural history collection spanning the Middle Ages to the Baroque period.

Freiburg’s Old Town also has its own landmarks: the Bächle are small waterways that flow through numerous lanes in the Old Town. In the Upper Old Town, the Gewerbekanal, Gerberau, Fischerau, and Insel are part of a walking tour over cobblestones. Freiburg Minster adds another architectural highlight: its west tower is 116 meters high. The 750-year-old Hosanna bell in the minster weighs three tons and is one of Germany’s oldest Angelus bells. On Freiburg’s Schlossberg, information panels and 3D display cases along various themed trails illustrate individual moments in its history; trail conditions may change.
