Whether you’re interested in biodiversity, drinking water, prehistory or birdlife, Langenau offers several distinct themes for a stay. BioSpaz is a walking trail showcasing biodiversity; other attractions include the Groundwater Experience World, two museums and the Donauried. The attractions differ in format and how much time they require, so you can focus on the interests that matter most to you.

Walking trail and exhibition about water

BioSpaz in Langenau is a 2.4-kilometre biodiversity walking trail with an alternative accessible route. Depending on your walking pace and how much you engage with the interactive features, allow around 1.5 hours for the BioSpaz. Its length and approximate duration provide a concrete guide for planning your day. Guided tours are offered monthly from April to October; advance registration is not required. Check the seasonal dates before your trip if you want to plan around a guided tour.

The 600-square-metre Groundwater Experience World exhibition at the Langenau waterworks traces drinking water’s journey from raindrop, through the limestone of the Swabian Alb, to the tap. It also explores the connection between the history of the Swabian Alb and the element of water. While BioSpaz focuses on biodiversity, the exhibition offers another perspective on water, through groundwater and drinking water.

Museums: local heritage and prehistory

The local history museum is at Kirchgasse 4, and the Museum of Prehistory and Early History is at Kirchgasse 9. The latter displays prehistoric finds from the caves of the Lone Valley, including replicas of well-known Ice Age art figures. This gives the museum a clear focus on prehistory, bringing together finds from the Lone Valley and depictions of Ice Age art. The local history museum is a separate attraction at its own address on Kirchgasse.

Springs, the Donauried and white storks

The Löffelbrunnen also draws attention to water. In landscaped, park-like grounds 500 metres northeast of Langenau’s parish church, the Löffelbrunnen, a spring-fed lake and other outlets emerge. The reference to the parish church helps you locate the site. While the Groundwater Experience World follows the journey of drinking water, here the focus is on the spring-fed lake and the water outlets in the grounds.

The Danube flows through Langenau within the Donauried Nature and Bird Sanctuary. Picnic islands, a panoramic swing and an observation tower invite you to explore the diverse natural surroundings. Each feature offers something different: the tower opens up views across the landscape, the panoramic swing is an attraction in its own right, and the picnic islands provide a place to take a break.

You can also spot nature in the heart of the town centre: as you stroll around, you may see more than 100 white storks building nests on many rooftops. The number may change over time. This offers a way to experience birdlife in an urban setting.
