Setzingen offers several local attractions: the town hall is home to the Brezelstüble, serving fresh regional baked goods as well as fair-trade coffee and tea; two playgrounds and a barbecue area round out the options. When planning your trip, it is also worth checking the Brezelstüble’s opening hours, as they may vary.
Brezelstüble, Playgrounds and Barbecue Area
The Brezelstüble is located in the town hall, in the former land registry office. Fresh regional baked goods, as well as fair-trade coffee and tea, are available every Saturday morning and Wednesday afternoon. Opening hours may vary; check the municipality’s latest notices before your visit.
In front of the Birkenfeldhalle in the Brennofen area of Setzingen, there is a playground with a ball court and a long-jump pit. Another playground is located in the “Mittelsteig” development, among the orchards. There is also a barbecue area on the “Halde” in Setzingen, where you can grill outdoors.
The Alb-Donau District: Culture, Hiking and Cycling
The Alb-Donau District is part of the Swabian Alb Biosphere Reserve. The district also has archaeological sites, monastery complexes, and hiking and cycling routes. Its archaeological heritage spans everything from cave finds to a Neolithic settlement. Near Schelklingen is Hohle Fels, a UNESCO World Heritage cave and the findspot of the “Venus of Hohle Fels” and the “Geierknochenflöte” (Vulture-bone flute). Both finds are around 42,500 years old. The Stone Age village of Ehrenstein in Blaustein is a Neolithic settlement in the Blau valley and is part of the transnational serial UNESCO World Heritage property “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps.”
The monastery complexes offer a glimpse into a different period. The former Premonstratensian Abbey of Obermarchtal is located in the Alb-Donau District; its monastery complex stands directly above the Danube and acquired its present form between 1686 and 1795. Blaubeuren Monastery was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1085 and today consists mainly of Gothic-style buildings dating from 1466 to 1510. The dates describe different aspects: 1085 is the year Blaubeuren was founded, while 1686 to 1795 is the period during which Obermarchtal acquired its present form.
For hiking routes, distance and duration are useful points of comparison. The 20 “Eiszeitpfade” (Ice Age Trails) circular routes are 6 to 14 km long and are suitable for day hikes. The family-friendly “Eiszeitspuren” (Ice Age Tracks) are 1 to 6 km long; the Contemplation Trail is intended for multi-day hikes. This gives you shorter routes, designated day hikes, and an option for hiking over several days.
The cycling routes also differ in distance: the “Eiszeittäler” (Ice Age Valleys) route is 75 km long, the “Berg Bier-Tour” is 115 km, and the “Albtäler” cycle route is 186 km. The “Albtäler” has been awarded four stars. The stated route lengths therefore range from 75 to 186 km, and the award applies to the longest of these three cycle routes.
