Erbach combines Renaissance and Rococo architecture with circular walking trails, cycling routes and a bathing area. Erbach Castle stands on a hill above the town. This gives you a choice of different ways to spend your stay: exploring church and castle architecture, getting active on foot or by bike, or relaxing at the bathing area.

Castle and Church: Architecture in Erbach

Erbach Castle on the Danube is a Renaissance building on a hill above the town. Its double-gabled façade, four squat round towers and distinctive stepped gables define the structure. The castle also contains a Renaissance room with a South Tyrolean faience stove. Castle Hill rises 50 metres above the Danube Valley and shapes Erbach’s townscape and surrounding landscape.

Another architectural highlight is the Baroque Church of St. Martin. It was built in 1767 on the site of a demolished late Gothic church and is considered one of the most beautiful small Rococo churches in Upper Swabia. Twenty frescoes by Franz Martin Kuen cover the vaulted surfaces inside the church. The bell tower is 45.80 metres high and has a distinctive onion dome. The church’s history, frescoes and tower each give it a distinctive architectural character. Erbach is also on the Upper Swabian Baroque Route, placing its local buildings in a broader regional context.

Circular Walking Trails, the Way of St. James and Cycling Trips

Erbach has ten circular walking trails. They pass biotopes and bird sanctuaries, while chapels, castles and Celtic settlement remains offer insights into Erbach’s history. Nature and local history come together along these trails. The Way of St. James offers another route on foot: it runs directly through Erbach, giving pilgrims and walkers a route through the town. While Erbach’s circular trails follow loop routes, the Way of St. James passes through the town.

Erbach is also a hub for cyclists: regional and long-distance cycling routes offer options for shorter rides as well as multi-day cycling trips. Erbach is also on the Danube Cycle Path. This means you can choose a trip to suit your schedule, from a shorter outing to a multi-day tour.

Bathing Area and Summer Culture

Erbach’s bathing area offers a quiet, natural setting with spacious lawns, shady spots and plenty of play options for children. Swimming, resting and relaxing are among the activities available there. The bathing area has free, unguarded parking and bicycle parking. It operates seasonally, and conditions may change; check the latest information before your visit.

During the summer months, the courtyard of Erbach Castle is one of the town’s open-air venues for cultural events. If you would like to include cultural events in your travel plans, check the dates for your travel period.
