The Blautopf brings Blaubeuren’s karst landscape to life; the monastery adds architectural and monastic history to the natural attraction, while the Felsenstieg offers a clearly measured hike. When choosing where to stay, you can weigh these three highlights separately: the spring and water cave, the medieval complex, or the circular trail with its stated duration and elevation profile.

The Blautopf: a karst spring with hidden depths

The Blautopf is a karst spring in the valley basin of Blaubeuren, whose waters appear in shades of blue and green. The funnel-shaped spring pool is 20.6 m deep and continues into a water cave in the limestone of the Lower Felsenkalk Formation. The geological interest therefore extends from the visible spring to its continuation underground in the limestone.

When planning your visit, timing matters: after temporary restrictions, the Blautopf reopened to everyone on January 15, 2025; construction work was still underway at that time. Check current access arrangements before travelling.

Blaubeuren Monastery: Gothic complex and bathhouse

Blaubeuren Monastery was founded as a Benedictine monastery in 1085 and today consists mainly of Gothic buildings dating from 1466 to 1510. The choir is the centerpiece of the complex. Its foundation date and predominantly Gothic buildings mark different historical layers of the monastery.

A tour of the monastery takes in the courtyard, the cloister with its cloister and cross garden, the choir with its high altar, and the monks’ medieval bathhouse. It is the only surviving bathhouse of its kind in Germany.

Hiking the Blaubeurer Felsenstieg

The Blaubeurer Felsenstieg is a quality hiking trail and a circular route around Blaubeuren. It is rated moderate and is part of the Ice Age Trails network. The route is listed as 10.40 km and 3:30 hours, with 440 metres of ascent and 440 metres of descent. Its distance, duration and elevation gain therefore offer more guidance than the kilometre figure alone. Route statistics may change if the trail is remapped; check the latest details before setting out.

The Blaubeuren branch of the Swabian Alb Association has selected worthwhile circular and point-to-point hikes in the Blaubeuren area. These complement the premium hiking trails suggested by the town: the Ice Age Hunter Trail and the Blaubeurer Felsenstieg. Individual hikes may vary; check the branch’s current selection for your specific outing.

Seasonal tour and current visit planning

From April to October, the Blautopfbähnle runs a panoramic tour through Blaubeuren’s medieval lanes and along picturesque paths to viewpoints. As a seasonal tour, it offers a different way to experience the lanes and viewpoints than hiking. Before travelling, check whether the tour operates during your planned visit.

The Historic Hammer Forge in Blaubeuren is closed until the end of 2028 due to extensive renovation work in the Blautopf area. Before visiting, check whether the closure period has changed.
