Zanavi lies on the left bank of the Kvabliani and on the southern slope of the Meskheti Mountains. The town combines a striking geographical setting with a clear cultural and historical focus: a fortress dating from the High Middle Ages, a 14th-century church and other historical traces.

Fortress and monastery in Patara Zanavi

The fortress of Zanavi is located in Patara Zanavi, in the municipality of Adigeni, about five kilometres from Adigeni. It dates from the High Middle Ages and comprises a three-storey tower and a water reservoir. The two structures serve different purposes: the tower defines the layout of the fortress, while the reservoir indicates a specific function of the complex.

The Chulevi Monastery is also located in Patara Zanavi. It includes a domed church dedicated to Saint George, dating from the 14th century. Its architectural style distinguishes it from the fortress and adds religious architecture to the area’s historical focus. A waterfall accessible to visitors is located a few metres from the monastery. As access may change locally, check whether a visit is possible before making plans.

Other historical traces

About two kilometres north of Zanavi, at the source of the Zanavi Gorge, lie the remains of a large hall church. They are located in a meadow in mixed woodland; a wall once enclosed the church ruins. Alongside the fortress and domed church, the remains of another religious building also come into view. The approximate location distinguishes this site from the buildings in Patara Zanavi.

Historically, Zanavi is connected with the Kvabliani community of Samtskhe. The area of Zanavi is also mentioned in the hagiographic work Life of Serapion Zarzmeli. These connections complement the architectural evidence with a historical community and a literary tradition, placing Zanavi within both regional history and written heritage.

Nature experiences in the wider destination of Samtskhe-Javakheti

Samtskhe-Javakheti consists of the historical provinces of Samtskhe and Javakheti. At this broader regional level, nature experiences add a different focus to Zanavi’s history of fortresses and churches. The Borjomi-Kharagauli Protected Areas also include the municipality of Adigeni. The Borjomi-Kharagauli National Park offers one-day and multi-day hikes; its network of tourist routes ranges from 400 to 2,642 metres in elevation. The trails are marked and equipped. Check the latest local information before hiking, as trail availability and conditions may change.

The national park also offers horse riding, cycling, snowshoeing, and cultural and educational tours. The offerings and seasonal conditions may change, so check locally which options are available during your travel dates. This makes it possible to distinguish the region’s nature focus from Zanavi’s historical themes without combining them into a single excursion destination.

The Javakheti Protected Areas offer another perspective on the landscape. Lakes, marshes, and subalpine and alpine meadows shape the area. From observation towers, visitors can spot 140 species of breeding and migratory birds. Birdwatching and the open landscapes of the protected areas provide a distinct nature experience within the Samtskhe-Javakheti destination.
