Agara is a distinct district within Tkhilnari. An archaeological report published in 2021 locates Complex 1 in a tributary of the Boloko and lists ten stone troughs there. It also mentions a narrow waterfall channel on a 35-meter-high slope along the left bank. Steps carved into the rock have been preserved.

Archaeological Details

A dozen stone hammers were found in connection with Agara’s production center. Some of the stone hammers associated with Agara weigh more than 300 kilograms. The district also has five channels and three depressions arranged compactly in terraces. The production center and the compact terraced layout thus represent distinct archaeological features.

Restaurants and Practical Choices

Hasanbegura is located in Tkhilnari and can accommodate 700 guests at a time. Capacity may change depending on operations; check it before making specific group plans if the number is important to your choice. The restaurant “ჩანჩქერი თხილნარში” is located in Zeda Tkhilnari, in Khelvachauri Municipality. Business information may change, so it is advisable to check the latest details before visiting.

The restaurant “კუნძული” offers live music and a lunch menu. When planning a meal, there are different criteria to consider: Hasanbegura’s potential group capacity, the precisely specified location of the restaurant in Zeda Tkhilnari, and the music and lunch offerings at “კუნძული”.

Adjara in a Broader Context

The broader destination of Adjara includes the Black Sea coast, mountains, wild nature, scenic viewpoints, and historic fortresses. For hiking, two different options can be compared: the marked, easy Tsablnara hiking trail in Mtirala National Park is seven kilometers long and designed for a day hike. Trail conditions may change. The Kobuleti Ispani Protected Area has three easy hiking trails: “Ispani 2,” “White Moss,” and “Drosera.” It is also an important refuge for migratory birds, as well as breeding and wintering birds. Special wooden skis for walking in the marsh can be rented there; check their availability before your trip. Another hiking route in the broader destination of Adjara is the Khulo–Skhalta trail. It connects two gorges in Khulo District, can be hiked in either direction, and is hikeable from late spring to late autumn.

Adjara’s cultural sites also reflect different historical ties. Petra Fortress preserves remains of a basilica dating from the 6th and 7th centuries, a palace, an ancient bath, and former medical and military areas. Gonio Fortress bears witness to Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman rule in the region. Adjara’s regional cuisine includes Adjarian khachapuri, a boat-shaped dish associated with Adjara’s fishing history. Tsolikouri wine is also produced in Adjara.
