Gonio combines a wide beach with steep, forested mountains and an archaeological site whose history dates back to antiquity. You can combine time by the water with walks, swimming, and a visit to Gonio-Apsaros Fortress. The fortress reveals different aspects of the site: its defensive structures stand alongside traces of baths, infrastructure, and residential areas.
Coast Between Sea and Mountains
Gonio’s wide beach lies between the sea and steep, forested mountains. Activities here include walking, swimming, and taking photos at sunrise or sunset. The water at Gonio Beach is considered clear; the beach is also a destination for diving in the Black Sea. This offers different ways to experience the coast: getting active on land, swimming, or spending an active day on the water. Which option suits your trip depends on how you want to divide your time between the beach and the historical sights.
Gonio-Apsaros: Fortress and Archaeological Finds
Gonio-Apsaros Fortress is among Georgia’s oldest and best-preserved Roman defensive fortresses. Its rectangular layout measures 222 by 195 meters. The fortification includes 18 defensive towers, including four main towers at the corners. Archaeological excavations uncovered Roman baths, a water supply system, military buildings, residential quarters, streets, and a sewer system. These finds add evidence of infrastructure and daily life to the picture of a defensive complex. The oldest archaeological layer discovered there dates to the 13th to 7th centuries BC. A treasure of unique goldsmithing artifacts from the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD was discovered near Gonio-Apsaros in 1974. According to certain church traditions, the burial place of the Apostle Matthias is believed to be in Gonio-Apsaros.
Plan Your Fortress Visit
At the Gonio-Apsaros Museum-Reserve, you can explore the fortress walls, towers, excavation areas, museum exhibitions, and artifacts. As specific visitor arrangements may change, check them before your visit. Guided tours are available in Georgian, Russian, and English. If a particular language is important to you, check its availability in advance.
More Activities on the Water and in the Air
Yacht trips are also associated with Gonio; their availability depends on the operator. Paragliding in Gonio is offered by the XCaucasus Paragliding Club. The pilots are described as certified; equipment checks and a briefing on takeoff and landing are part of the pre-flight process. Check in advance whether the activity is available and what safety procedures apply. This lets you plan activities at sea and in the air as separate options alongside a fortress visit, without treating them as the same thing as spending time at the beach.
Weigh Up Location and Accommodation
The Gonio–Kvariati resort area has well-maintained beaches, cafés, bars, shops, and accommodation. Commercial establishments can change over time; if a particular business is important to your plans, check its current availability. Gonio is about 12 kilometers from Batumi, and the drive takes approximately 25 minutes. These approximate figures can help you weigh up Gonio as a possible base compared with Batumi, for example if you want to include time at the beach and a visit to the fortress in your travel plans.
Gonio Fortress is also relevant for business gatherings: it is considered a MICE venue for events with more than 500 people. Capacity and event arrangements may change, so confirm the specific details when planning.
