La Thuile offers several distinct reasons to spend time outdoors. Lac de La Thuile is a natural lake of glacial origin and the only natural lake in the Massif des Bauges. There is also the panorama from Roche du Guet, a hike along the ridges and a climbing site on limestone rock. When planning your trip, you can decide whether to focus on nature by the lake, views and hiking, or climbing.

Lake and Viewpoints

The municipal webpage, updated on July 23, 2026, classifies Lac de La Thuile as an Espace Naturel Sensible and states that the lake area is reserved exclusively for pedestrians. Keep this rule in mind when planning a visit to the lake. The lake’s glacial origin and the access restriction give it two distinct aspects: how it was formed and the conditions for visiting the area.

At the southern tip of the Massif des Bauges lies the Roche du Guet viewpoint. From there, the panorama extends over the Combe de Savoie, the Grésivaudan and the Massif de Belledonne. There is also an interpretation panel at the viewpoint. You can reach Roche du Guet on foot from both the village of La Thuile and the hamlet of Lac via marked trails. As trail conditions can change seasonally, check them before setting off.

Hiking: Ridges and Summit Views

The Les crêtes de La Thuile hike follows the ridges and offers open views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Yellow-green markings and yellow hiking signs indicate the route. At the “Le Tapin-Ouest” sign, there is a difficult section secured with a cable. The hike therefore combines wide-ranging views with a specifically identified challenging section.

The route over Mont Rochefort offers a different view: from the summit, you can see Lac de La Thuile below. There are unsecured rock faces near the summit. When planning this hike, you should therefore take into account both the lake view and the warning about the rock faces near the summit. The two routes have different highlights: Les crêtes focuses on ridge panoramas and the section at the Le Tapin-Ouest sign, while Mont Rochefort features views of the lake and the summit surroundings.

Climbing and the Col du Mont

Pierrier des Quarts is a climbing site near Lac de La Thuile. It has several varied, equipped climbing routes on high-quality limestone rock. The site is open to everyone and suitable for all climbing levels; use is at your own risk.

The Col du Mont has historical and geographical links to Cruet. This natural pass connects La Thuile with Cruet; from there, the most direct route leads down into the valley. Historically, the Col was a familiar pass for residents of La Thuile who owned a vineyard plot in the commune of Cruet.
