Hauteluce combines mountain trails with a rich cultural heritage. The unspoilt valley opens up towards the Mont Blanc massif. When planning your trip, you can choose from a range of activities: hikes with clearly stated durations, a mountain biking circuit, and insights into the history and architecture of the area. In winter, seasonal connections are also available. This lets you decide which activities you want to shape your stay, without trying to fit everything into a single day’s itinerary.
Hikes and Trails in the Valley
Two moderately difficult hikes are easy to compare by distance and time required. The Hauteluce–Barrage de la Girotte circular hike is 8.8 kilometres long and takes about 4 hours and 15 minutes. It passes through dense spruce forest and the Colombe alpine pastures on the way to the dam. The also moderately difficult Hauteluce–Col de la Fenêtre hike is a 6.8-kilometre out-and-back route, with an estimated duration of about 2 hours and 30 minutes. It is therefore shorter and takes less time. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
There is also a named option for mountain biking: VTT Cross country – La Bichounette is a 10.5-kilometre circular route starting in Hauteluce. The route passes through part of the valley and along alpine pastures. Traditional Beaufortain architecture—with wooden chalets, mazots and chapels—as well as wide, accessible paths shape the scenery along the way. If you would rather focus on chapels, Le tour des chapelles is an accessible route through the valley’s preserved chapel sites.
Village History and Architecture
The Ecomusée de Hauteluce presents the cultural heritage of the village and its valley. Through traditional clothing, farming techniques, schooling and former trades, it shows how residents lived from the 19th century to the 1960s. Groups and individual visitors can explore the museum free of charge and at their own pace. The different themes provide a timeline for the visit, ranging from everyday life and work to schooling. Check the latest information before your visit for details on visiting arrangements.
In the hamlet of Belleville stands the Chapelle Ste Agathe, a 12th-century Romanesque chapel and a protected historic monument. Its remarkable 15th-century mural depicts Christ surrounded by the twelve apostles. An altarpiece bears a painting depicting the martyrdom of Saint Agatha in 251 and Saint Clare in 1253. At Eglise Saint-Jacques-d’Assyrie, notable features include the onion-shaped bell tower, the richly decorated façade with trompe-l’œil details, and the gilded altarpieces.
Another village landmark is the lime tree L’arbre de la liberté. It has stood in the centre of Hauteluce for more than 200 years and was planted during the French Revolution. From Hameau et chapelle de Saint Sauveur, you can enjoy a wide view of the village; the chapel there is visible only from the outside. At Hameau des Côtes, you can see a mill that is not open to visitors, old wooden grain stores, and a stream flowing through the hamlet. Hameau et chapelle du Praz lies just before arriving in Hauteluce or when leaving the village. Its features include old wooden chalets, a small lane and a remarkable chapel, visible only from the outside, in front of the Beaufortain massif.
Village Life and Seasonal Activities
Base de loisirs du Chozal has a multisport court, children’s play equipment, a freely accessible outdoor fitness trail, a boules court, tennis courts and picnic tables. As access varies by season, check the conditions before visiting. The facilities offer everything from exercise to places to take a break; which ones you use depends on your interests.
For summer 2026, a market featuring local producers and craftspeople was planned in the centre of Hauteluce, along with musical performances in the village centre on Mondays. If you are planning a visit in a later summer, check the dates for that season again.
Winter Connections
In winter, good skiers can take a direct chairlift from Hauteluce to the Les Saisies ski area. A free winter shuttle connects Hauteluce with Hauteluce Val Joly and Les Contamines-Montjoie. Check the timetable and seasonal service before travelling; this will help you plan winter activities around your stay.
