A flat promenade, a 4.1-kilometre loop and the history of the thermal baths give you several practical starting points for planning your stay in Challes-les-Eaux. The options differ in route profile, landscape and theme: you can compare a route linking natural and urban areas, circular trails that can be combined, forest and viewpoint features, and traces of local history. This gives you different ways to spend time outdoors and explore the area’s heritage.

Trails with different profiles

The “Promenade confort” connects a natural area with an urban one. It is flat and has an obstacle-free surface; benches are placed along the route. The main considerations when choosing this trail are its route, surface and available seating. The “Aux sources de Challes-les-Eaux” loop is 4.1 km long, with 15 m of elevation gain. This makes it possible to compare a loop with a specified length and elevation gain with a route whose profile is explicitly flat.

The Forêt Sport Nature & Santé area on the slopes of Mont Saint Michel includes three circular trails that can be combined. If you don’t want to base your choice of route on a single distance, the option to link several loops can be another criterion to consider.

Forest, viewpoints and landscape

Forêt Sport features a boardwalk through moss-covered woodland, as well as playful elements including wooden figures and balancing trails along the tree trunks. There is also a panoramic viewpoint with deckchairs. The boardwalk and viewpoint offer a different focus from the information about a loop’s length and elevation gain.

The Marais des Chassettes is a continental ZNIEFF type 1 area covering 15.07 hectares. Once a peat bog, it contributed to the formation of unique woodland in the Chambéry cluse. Forêt Sport focuses on specific trail and viewpoint features, while the Marais highlights ecological classification and landscape development.

Thermal history and townscape

A thermal spa was built at the spring site on 12 February 1872. In 1874, the Cercle du Casino de Challes was founded; the society had a casino built on stilts driven into the marsh. In 1876, the thermal spa welcomed its first bathers, who were spa guests at the time. This sequence of years shows different stages in the area’s history: construction of the thermal spa, the founding of the casino society and the arrival of the first guests.

The thermal spa closed in 2023. Its heritage remains visible in a tree-filled park and Belle Époque architecture. Parc de Triviers features century-old trees, a pond, flower beds and a manor house. Individuals and groups can visit the park free of charge and independently. Check the visitor information again before your trip.

Planning heritage visits and activities

The Parcours d’orientation patrimonial Challes-les-Eaux lets visitors discover the municipality’s diverse heritage by answering questions at the orientation points. It starts at the Colombier car park. Before your visit, check whether access conditions are unchanged.

The Plan d’eau de Challes-les-Eaux is used year-round for fishing and unsupervised swimming. Local rules for both activities may change, so check them before making plans. The options also differ in what they offer: the Parcours introduces visitors to the area’s heritage through questions, while the Plan d’eau is used for fishing and swimming.
