Montcel combines the forests and alpine meadows of Revard with two clearly distinct hikes. The out-and-back hike to Croix des Bergers is very easy and takes about two and a half hours; the Les crĂŞtes du Revard loop is moderately difficult and takes approximately four hours. A protected wetland, regional farm products and the history of two churches also offer concrete ways to explore the area during your stay.

Forests, alpine meadows and a protected wetland

Montcel has been part of the Massif des Bauges Regional Natural Park since 1995. In the eastern part of the commune, on the slopes of Mont Revard, the landscape is shaped predominantly by forests and alpine meadows. At Revard, 350 hectares belong to Montcel, of which 100 hectares are alpine meadows. This landscape can also be seen along the hiking trails: The route to Croix des Bergers passes through forest and alpine meadows, as well as part of the Tourbière des Creusates. The protected wetland is designated a Natura 2000 site; signs along the route provide information about the wetland.

Two hikes with different time requirements

The route to Croix des Bergers is a very easy 3.6-kilometre out-and-back hike. It starts and ends at the Crolles car park in Montcel and takes about two and a half hours. The section through the Tourbière des Creusates adds a specific natural area to the forest and alpine meadows, which you can learn more about along the way. The signs relate to the wetland itself.

As a longer alternative, the 9.3-kilometre Les crêtes du Revard loop passes through Montcel. It is moderately difficult; walking time is about four hours. The route passes through alpine meadows, forests and rocky ridges, offering views of Lac du Bourget, Aix-les-Bains, Dauphiné, the Jura and Mont Blanc. This gives you two distinct options for planning your day: a very easy, shorter hike lasting around two and a half hours, and a considerably longer loop of moderate difficulty.

Winter activities and mountain biking

Since 1991, Porte de Crolles has been one of three access points to the ski area. The other two are in La Féclaz and Saint-François-de-Sales. There is also a named route for mountain bikers: the VTT Bois Brulé passes through Montcel. This information gives an overview of the commune’s winter and cycling activities without conflating them with the hiking routes described above.

Chapels and parish church

Chapelle Saint Robert and Saint-Georges Parish Church represent different periods in the area’s history. In 1867, the people of Montcel decided to build Chapelle Saint Robert near the presumed former site of the Priory of Saint Robert. It was consecrated on 20 February 1871 by Cardinal Billiet, Archbishop of Chambéry. During its renovation in 1989, the main façade, made almost entirely of molasse, and the bell tower’s corner stones were brought back into prominence. The stained-glass windows were made by glass artist Marie Pierre Delbecque.

Saint-Georges Parish Church originated as a rural chapel founded by members of a religious order from the Priory of Saint-Robert. It probably became a parish church towards the end of the 13th century. It was rebuilt in 1844–1848. This cautious dating of the church’s early history contrasts with the precise dates given for Chapelle Saint Robert.

Farm products and places to visit

L’Epicafé combines a grocery shop and a café. Its offerings include regional products, bread for sale, aperitifs, coffee and tea; the place also offers impressive views. As opening hours may change, it is worth checking current visiting hours in advance.

GAEC de La Cluse makes farmhouse cheese and sells Tome des Bauges and Revard cheese, including le Crémeuh. Product availability may vary. In winter, the farm welcomes visitors at its farm in the valley in Montcel; seasonal arrangements may change, so it is advisable to enquire in advance. Tours of the farm and its animals are offered through FACIM. Booking a tour requires contacting the Féclaz tourist office.
