There are several different ways to plan a stay in Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu: a marked heritage trail, historic religious buildings, an orienteering course in the town center, as well as the market and Ferme de Savoye. For planning purposes, it helps to distinguish between these activities by type—from a route with sights to active orienteering and local market and animal experiences.
Heritage trail or orienteering course?
The marked Chemin du Patrimoine is a walking route of about five kilometers with 13 sights. Check the current route map before setting out. In the town center, the orienteering course has nine stations; the orienteering courses in Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu can be completed on foot or running. The two formats offer different experiences: the Chemin is defined by its circular route, approximate length and sights, while the course focuses on its stations in the town center. When planning your time, you can first decide whether to focus on a marked walking route or the orienteering course stations. Check the current map for the course.
Chapel, château and church
The Chapelle Saint Thomas was built in 1654 by François de Laigue, Baron of Chandieu. Its bell was listed as a historic monument in 1962. In 2015, the chapel was fully restored in collaboration with the French heritage authorities. These dates refer to different aspects of its history: 1654 marks its construction, 1962 the bell’s protected status, and 2015 the restoration of the entire building.
The Château de Chandieu was built on the site of a Gallo-Roman castellum. The Église Saint Pierre aux Liens features Romanesque architecture and was originally surrounded by a cemetery and a Cluniac priory. Its bell tower collapsed in 1837 and was subsequently rebuilt; the church was consecrated in 1844. The architecture and construction history offer different perspectives: Romanesque describes the style, while the dates 1837 and 1844 place the tower’s later collapse and reconstruction, as well as the church’s consecration, in time.
Market and Ferme de Savoye
The Saint-Pierre-de-Chandieu market offers fruit and vegetables, charcuterie, meat, flowers and regional products. The vendors may vary. This makes the market a different reason to visit than the historic buildings: interest here centers on the goods on offer rather than architecture and historical dates.
Ferme de Savoye offers encounters with more than 100 animals and horse-drawn carriage rides. Educational tours of the animal facilities are also available. Booking may be required for these visits; check in advance whether this applies to the activity you want. Unlike at the market, the focus here is on animals, rides and tours of the animal facilities. This lets you weigh up the local activities according to the focus you want for your stay.
