Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d'Or combines walks through a predominantly green landscape with routes that follow the history of its quarries and heritage buildings dating back several centuries. To plan your visit, start with the routes: the Tour de Saint-Didier is 11 km long, while the Sentier du ruisseau de Rochecardon is less than 2 km. The Chapelle Saint-Fortunat and a well-established market on May 1 also give the town a cultural and culinary character.

Hiking between valley views and quarry history

The Tour de Saint-Didier is an 11 km hike that takes three hours and has an elevation gain of 332 m. It starts in Le Bourg; TCL bus lines 20, 22 and 23 run from the St Didier Église stop. The route passes through the quarry site to Saint-Fortunat and continues to the dry-stone site of Les Essarts. The pointed hut at Giverdy offers views of Lyon. Trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out and check the timetable before travelling.

A much shorter option is the Sentier du ruisseau de Rochecardon. This accessible walk of less than 2 km passes through clearings, woodland and marshland, with a diverse range of flora and fauna. It starts on Chemin du ruisseau de Saint-André in Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d'Or and can be reached by bus lines 21 or 61 to the La Gabrielle stop. As transport information may change, check the timetable before travelling.

The Sentier de la Pierre offers a different focus: this 6 km route traces the heritage of the Saint-Fortunat quarry. It includes the former quarries and the former quarry workers’ hamlet. At six kilometres, the trail sits between the 11 km Tour de Saint-Didier and the Rochecardon route, which is under 2 km; it also takes you directly to traces of the area's quarrying past.

A chapel and châteaux with distinct building histories

The Gothic Chapelle Saint-Fortunat dates from the 14th century and was a place of pilgrimage for a long time. It was enlarged around 1850. Its rectangular bell tower can be reached through the vaulted passage, dated 1608, leading to the chapel square. Its history of construction thus brings together several periods: the medieval chapel, the passage from the early 17th century and the later extension.

Different building phases also meet at the Château de Saint-André-du-Coing. It was rebuilt in the 16th century on the foundations of a medieval castle, and two towers remain at the ends of the terrace. The Château de Fromente is a former fortified house founded in the Middle Ages. The estate is privately owned and currently used as a school.

Green paths and a spring market date

Most of Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d'Or lies within a green zone, making it a good place for walks and for discovering an exceptional natural heritage. Nature trails link small heritage sites such as wash houses and cabornes with viewpoints overlooking the surrounding valleys. Along the way, you can encounter woodland and wetlands as well as historic structures and views of the landscape.

The Marché aux Fleurs et aux Saveurs is a well-established event held on May 1. Regional artisans offer products such as honey, cheese, wines, jams and walnut products; the selection may vary from one edition to another. If you would like to plan your stay around the market, check the dates for the relevant edition. Alongside walks and architectural history, regional products also offer a distinct reason to visit.
