The market, history and varied landscape offer different points of interest for a stay in Limas. The town lies in the heart of Beaujolais, but its landscape is not limited to vineyards: it also includes horticulture, residential, industrial and commercial areas, major transport routes and paths through the surrounding countryside. This mix helps you understand Limas as a travel destination without reducing it to a single landscape motif.

Weekly Market and the Annual Calendar

The market in Limas takes place at Place de Mieming on Tuesday and Saturday mornings and offers local and seasonal produce. These two mornings provide a specific time to plan a market visit during your stay. As the municipal schedule may change, please check the dates before you travel.

The Conscrits festival is also held every year in early March, unless elections are scheduled during that period. The market and festival offer two different timeframes: the market takes place twice a week, while the festival is part of the annual calendar in early March and is subject to the election-related exception. Check the current dates for both events for your travel year.

History and Art in Limas

The historical forms of the name Lymanz and Lymans date back to before the Gallo-Roman period. Around 1280, Lymans was an important fortified town. Alongside a secular lord, there was an ecclesiastical lord appointed by Cluny, as well as the dean of Lymans. A provost sent by the lord of Beaujeu collected dues and exercised minor jurisdiction. The medieval history thus includes secular and ecclesiastical roles, as well as specific administrative and judicial duties.

A later reference is the 1560 fief register of Limas, which lists the fief and Château de Belleroche. The château itself no longer survives. Another part of the town’s historic heritage can be found in the church of Saint-Gilles de Limas: it houses two paintings from the late 16th century, both listed as historic monuments. The references to the château and the two paintings therefore point to different parts of local history: a vanished building and surviving works of art.

Green Spaces, Paths and Landscape

Parc Guillermet offers a concrete example of how Limas manages its green spaces. It is among the green areas maintained using late mowing. The annual cut takes place after July 15; late mowing creates refuges for pollinating insects and promotes pollination. This specifies both a set time for maintenance and its ecological purpose. A restored path also runs through Parc Guillermet, intended to make walking easier for residents.

The surrounding countryside was also the subject of a specific event: in 2021, a guided geology walk organized by the Comité Histoire et Patrimoine followed paths and lanes to the carrière de Limas. This walk took place in 2021. If a similar event is important to your trip, check the current program in advance.
