Chaponnay offers several distinct reasons to visit: the Zone humide de la Sauzaye draws attention to wetlands, agricultural land and observation areas, while the Église Saint-Barthélémy offers a focus on heritage. There is also the Parc municipal, which is notable both for its trees and for hosting major cultural events. When planning your trip, it is worth treating nature, the church and scheduled events as separate points of interest. This lets you choose according to your interests and then check whether a tour or event falls during your travel dates.

Wetlands and observation areas

The Zone humide de la Sauzaye covers 47 hectares. Within the wetland, 22 hectares of agricultural land are preserved. These two figures describe different aspects of the area: its size and the preservation of agricultural land. Footpaths and observation areas offer practical ways to focus your visit on the natural environment and wildlife watching. In contrast to the Église Saint-Barthélémy, the emphasis here is on wetlands, agricultural land and opportunities for observation; at the church, the focus is on restoration and ecclesiastical features.

The Parc municipal

The Parc municipal has more than 200 trees across just under 4.5 hectares. The park is open to visitors free of charge every day throughout the year; check the latest access information before your visit. It also hosts Chaponnay’s major cultural events, whose dates may vary. This distinction matters when planning: a park visit depends on year-round access, while attending a particular event depends on its scheduled date. If the event calendar will determine your plans, check the date for your travel period.

Restoration and heritage

Following almost 18 months of work, the Église Saint-Barthélémy was fully renovated. The restoration included statues, Stations of the Cross, chapels and stained-glass windows. An entrance area allows visitors to see inside even when the church is closed.

Tours, workshops and events

A municipal notice from 2025 mentioned guided tours organized year-round by La Découverte, covering heritage in Chaponnay and the surrounding area. This scope is broader than a single point of interest in Chaponnay; check the current tour program before your trip. A municipal newsletter from 2025 also listed creative workshops by La Découverte: mosaics, weaving and plaiting, and basket-making with wild materials. These focus on practical creative techniques, while the tours are devoted to heritage. As workshop offerings may change, check in advance what is currently available. Tickets for performances in the cultural season can be purchased on the evening of the performance, subject to availability. The Foire de Chaponnay takes place in the town center on Whit Monday. If you are planning your trip around the Foire, check the date for the year you wish to visit. The dates work differently: tours and workshops follow the current program, while the Foire takes place on Whit Monday.
