Saint-Cyr-les-Vignes lies at the transition between the Plaine du Forez and the foothills of the Monts du Lyonnais. The surrounding landscape provides a backdrop for the various discoveries to be made locally: hiking, a mountain bike ride, castles and a farm visit where you can learn about ice cream making. When planning, it is worth treating the two routes as separate outings. They differ in length, duration and difficulty.

Hiking between woodland and viewpoints

The Sentier Entre plaine et monts starts in Saint-Cyr-les-Vignes. This moderately difficult hike is 11 kilometres long and takes around three hours. Part of the route passes through the Bois de Sury; along the way, there are viewpoints overlooking the Monts du Forez. GPX and KML files are available to help with navigation, and can be exported to a GPS device or another navigation device. This lets you have the route ready on your own device in advance.

A second perspective on the plain and its ponds

The N°32 Les étangs mountain bike route is another option: it is 9 kilometres long, rated easy and listed as taking one hour. The route follows paths and wooded lanes towards the hamlet of Montchal and through Sury in the plain. Along the way, it offers a panorama of the Plaine du Forez and its ponds.

These bodies of water also give the route a historical dimension. The ponds you see are man-made: they were created in the 17th century on marshy, uncultivated land and were originally associated with fish farming. A ride here brings together the landscape and the ponds’ former economic purpose. Compared with the Sentier, which runs on foot through the Bois de Sury, N°32 has a shorter stated duration and a different mode of transport. The different difficulty ratings—moderate for the hiking trail and easy for the mountain bike route—make it easy to distinguish between the two options.

Castles and church history

The local heritage also reveals different facets. The Château de la Sauvardière is still surrounded by fortifications. The Château du marquis de Poncin is a château from the early modern period and has an extensive estate. The two buildings thus represent different historical features: the fortifications define the appearance of the Sauvardière, while the Château du marquis de Poncin is distinguished by its period and the size of its estate.

Another historical landmark is the Église Saint-Cyr et Saint Julitte. In 984, it belonged to the holdings of the Primatiale de Lyon. This early church-history connection adds another perspective on the history of the place alongside the information about its castles.

A farm visit with a tasting

The Ferme des Délices Foréziens offers a farm visit where visitors can learn about ice cream making. The visit ends with an ice cream tasting. This experience has a different focus from the routes and historic buildings: here, the emphasis is on how a food product is made. Visitors looking to combine several interests during their stay can pair a hike or mountain bike ride with an insight into local ice cream making.

The viewpoints over the Monts du Forez and the panorama across the Plaine du Forez each provide their own distinctive landscape highlights. Together with the castles and church history, they offer a choice of outdoor activities, historical themes and a visit centred on ice cream.
