Le Cergne lies in the Massif Central at an altitude of 476 to 793 metres. Marked hiking trails, the Way of St. James and the Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-FĂ tima give the village several points of interest for a stay: scenery, outdoor activities and local history.

Hiking Trails and Scenery

The Balade entre Monts et Forêts – PR 10 is a signposted hiking trail in Le Cergne. It offers remarkable views of the Roanne plain, the Monts du Forez, the green Beaujolais, the Monts du Lyonnais and the bocage landscape of Brionnais. If you would like to focus on the scenery during your hike, you can use these views to help choose your route.

The PR 10 starts at the car park opposite the town hall. The FFRP rates it according to three criteria: effort 3 (not very difficult), technical difficulty 2 (fairly easy) and risk 2 (fairly low). The ratings should be read separately: effort, technical difficulty and risk describe different aspects of a route. This allows you to consider the ratings in detail rather than reducing them to a single word for difficulty.

The Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela begins in Le Cergne, in the Roannais. From there, you can walk the 90-kilometre route to Pommiers-en-Forez. The route is lined with rivers and forests, with beech woods, fir forests and pastureland nearby. The two hiking routes offer different planning details: the PR 10 has three FFRP ratings, while the Way of St. James is described by its length and endpoint, Pommiers-en-Forez.

Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-FĂ tima

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Fàtima, in the hamlet of Fontimpe, is part of Le Cergne’s religious heritage. It was built between 1943 and 1948 at the initiative of parish priest Guyot. The residents contributed to its construction with donations and had prayed for the prisoners’ return. The chapel’s story therefore connects the local church building with the priest’s initiative and the residents’ prayers.

Steps lead to the top of the tower, which offers an exceptional panorama. In 2026, the chapel is open every day throughout the year; check the opening information before your visit.

Accommodation and Planning Your Visit

Le Cergne offers seven wooden chalets for year-round accommodation. Check availability before booking. The leisure area by the municipal chalets adds a fishing pond and marked walking trails to the hiking options. If you would like to plan different activities during your stay, you can fish here or enjoy a walk along the trails.

A local service open to everyone connects Le Cergne with Charlieu. A weekly market is held there. If you are planning to visit Charlieu using this service, coordinate your journey and market visit with the timetable. Check the timetable and operating conditions again before travelling.
